Ingrown hair

Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? My dog started off with a lump on his head so after a trip to the vets it was cleared out but now it is leaking pus and getting bigger. Vet said to keep cleaning it out as if we have to take him back he will have to operate. Obviously I would like to avoid this if I can, so any hints on best way to do it? Would salt water do any good? Anything like a cream I can put on it? Thanks!

What antibiotics is he on?

Saline is as good as anything and try to keep it open as if the would colses with hair in it will erupt again.

What sort of coat?

Thanks for the reply! He finished his antibiotics a week ago so not on any now, probably why its come back!
Hes a doberman so very short haired.
