I have just picked up an inhaler and some steroid inhaler thingies from the vet. She thinks he has an allergy. So I get home and read the instructions but the actual inhaler is for people. So my question is how on earth do I get that over horses nostrils and mouth?!! Vet is ringing me later so I can ask her then but am I being thick or should there be some kind of adapter?

A friend had a horse last summer that had to have an inhaler and she and her friend always did it together - it just worked better to have two people. One administering the inhaler, the other holding the other nostril closed.

Have fun :D

No - that will be dangerous as the horse will be scared witless by the inhaler puff, you'll find it difficult to time, and waste a lot of the product.

Best thing to use is an equihaler - your vet can get this for you

I guess you've been given something like Clenil Modulate and Ventolin inhalers?

The Equihaler takes a little getting used to, but practice makes perfect. The Aromask is the best, but is much more expensive.

You can use an ordinary baby spacer from the chemist - but for a bigger horse they are far too small. We sarted wiht that but then got the equihaler.

Ha ha - EQUI-inhaler is £260. Baby inhaler from Boots is £15 and works just as well. Introduce it slowly to your horse and he should be fine. Sunny was on his baby inhaler, with 2 different drugs, all summer and autumn, though fat lot of good it did him. Had to give 10 puffs of ventipulmin, wait a bit then 5 puffs of steroid. Sunny good as gold. One hand over right nostril, press bendy rubber inhaler over left nostril with drug puffer already inserted, hold inhaler in place with heel of hand and press down on puffer with left index finger. Be ready to move with the horse's muzzle if he moves. Polo afterwards. I did it daily, single handed no problem for months and months.

Thanks guys. I have the baby spacer. We have decided to have him scoped which will happen at home next week. Til then vet has asked me to get him used to the baby spacer. Just showed it to him. Look of horror on his face to begin with and lots of snorting. 5 mins later he was stood with it in place, my other hand over his free nostril and amazingly well behaved. Much patting and fuss from Mum and lots of polos. :D
ETA I have the Clentil Modulate.
