I have a 6yo Welsh section D who has been fully broken for around 1.5 years now (just hacking and dressage lessons). I have since found out I'm pregnant and have decided not to ride. Instead of loaning him I have decided to give him some time off from ridden work and really focus on ground work and building our relationship (for when I do continue to ride, and probably do so a little less confident than before!).

I'm looking on some good recommendations for training programs, books and in hand training we can start. Of course the lunging and basic groundwork (grooming, leading out, etc) will still continue but I'm looking to expand this but have no idea where to start. I've read snippets of clicker training, parelli, natural horsemanship etc but it's all foreign to me! Any books / style of training you recommend?

If you do want to go down the clicker route, Connection Training is an online subscription platform with step-by-step courses and live study groups. It's excellent.

Miri Hackett does a good groundwork series that you can subscribe to on Patreon.

Congrats on your pregnancy :) I am 7 months and my gelding is 5 so have decided to give him a break over winter and focus on groundwork instead too.

I agree with above regarding Miri Hackett! I subscribed to her Patreon and it’s £6 per month for unlimited access if her videos, she’s also started doing some “work along” groundwork podcasts to listen to as you work! It’s similar to the TRT method but I prefer her way of explaining things (and for me it was much kinder on the wallet!)

I did a series of groundwork exercises for my horse with chronic and acute SI dysfunction and KS and it really helped to build his core and top line. This was inconjunction with my vet physio who recommended particular exercises. I have a list of exercises if you would like to PM me, mainly comprising of pole work in hand with the use of a core Equi band/TheraBand to aid core stability and abdominal recruitment and I also carried out carrot stretches.

Before and after photos - I'm quite proud of these as I put in an awful lot of work over 4 months with the help of the vet, physio and pro rider.

I have both Miri Hackett and TRT (same method). Highly recommend! Miri is also very helpful to contact if you need help and does private lessons (on zoom)!

Congrats!

I like the Cobs Can workbook by Omar Robia. All the exercises can be done inhand and the emphasis is on suppleness. I've found it really useful, though I need a third hand to hold the book plus manage an over-excited coblet who loves learning new things.

eta: my solution has been to focus on micro-sessions, so we do one new thing when he's ready and then do one or two things that he knows and thinks are fun.

search for Babette Teschen, a course in lunging. I really like her approach to correct movement by the horse uses lunging over the whole arena not just circles
