I have an 11 month old Dartmoor Hill Pony with whom i would like to begin some inhand showing but I know nothing about showing. I have never done it before. Could some kind soul please explain it all to me?
What do I wear? what should he wear? What classes would he be able to go in? What does he have to be able to do?

Obviously I would only be planning on getting him out once maybe twice this year and only to local shows but I don't wanna turn up looking like an idiot!

You'll be doing young stock and mountain and moorland.

He should be spotlessly clean and in a white halter I think!

You will walk round in a group then the steward will ask you to halt and one by one you trot out to the back of the line. You'll then be asked to line up and when it is your turn you walk out, stand up for the judge then when told walk away and trot back to the line.

I would recommend going to watch a couple you'll soon get the gist.

DHP's can't do M+M as they're not a 'pure' breed, you could do youngstock, coloured if he's coloured, ring experience. He should wear a bitless bridle and you a shirt and tie, trousers in an opposite colour to his legs...if he's got dark legs wear light trousers etc, smart shoes you can run in and a waistcoat or hacking jacket. Pony should also be plaited.

I stand corrected ;). Not that up on m&m s
Neither am I, I just happen to have a DHP x cob and have been told I can't take him in M+M classes :( I did sneak him in as a part bred welsh cob though for the experience.....he's actually cross with a Vanner :D

Some local shows are not so stuffy. I have an unregistered, hill bred, welshy. My local show what let me do a welsh class with him, would only be an issue if we qualified for something.

Ponies uk have an unregistered native class though and I think you can do that.
