Okay, I have entered my first inhand class. It is best turned out and best coloured. So I am now going to ask a really stupid question. What happens, do you just stand still?

you will walk around the ring and they may ask you to trot but not very likely then you will be aske to line up and the judges will inspect you and your horse and tack then ou may be asked to walk around again until they decide on te winner and then they will line you up in order and they will give you your rosettes :) dont worry its really simple just follow everyone else and do what the judges ask you :) oh yeah and try not to go in first if you are not sure what to do :)
good luck let us know how you do x

You enter the ring to the left with the horse on the inside (the judge doesn't want to look at you!), keep walking round and usually the steward will eventually stop the class at some point when everyone's been walking around for a bit and then get everyone to trot across one side of the ring then join back on to the rest. Then you will walk around again and the udge will bring you in in some sort of order (pay attention so you don't miss if they want you in). Then you will have to do an individual show (stand in front of judge for assessment, walk away, trot back). Then they will probably send you all out again and then pull you in in the final order, then hopefully you will get a rosette. Simples. Tack - in-hand bridle for preference or a nice clean bridle (no martingale and cavesson noseband, preferably not black). No saddle.
Good luck.

We did our first show in May. As described above. This is the individual show bit.

Like you I had no clue as to what would happen so initially I just watched the others. I'm not saying we are anywhere near perfect but it seemed to go ok. Give your horse more rein than I did as he didn't trot well and that is normally his best pace. I was terrified he would tank off as he tends to do so I mucked it up and had to drag him along :(.

You WILL be asked to trot up as a group and individually. When the judge asks you to go individually, you walk away and then trot back-very important!

Don't forget to turn the horse away from you on your individual show, practice at home!
My friend lost a class because she turned the horse the wrong way. You want a nice transition into trot there's nothing worse than someone dragging their horse along, again practice at home, my horse knows that as soon as we turn and I say trot he trots!
Then as soon as you turn trot towards the judge as they like to stand in front of you to see if your horse moves straight, they will get out of the way! Then continue trotting past them to the back of the line up then go into your place.
Make sure your horse stands for the judge, pick some grass or have something with you that you can use to get him to arch his neck. Stand in front of him, but be prepared to move if the judge wants to look at the front of your horse. Try and train him to stand with his front legs square and one of his back legs (normally the left one) slightly behind, don't worry if you take a few seconds to achieve this the judge wont mind :)
Remember you are showing him, not walking him to the field
Hope this helps, I used to do a lot of in-hand stuff with my boy x

Ahh thanks seahorse and everyone else. I have been practice the turn and the trot. We are having problems with the standing still, as I forgot to say he is only 2! But the tip about grass or something might help. I will have a go.

All very helpful information! Im taking my 2yr old to his first show on Sunday, only doing one class though as dont want him to get tired and then associate going out with being knackered!
