Hey everybody.

Im thinking of taking my horse to a local show soon. He's a rising 3yr old Welsh Section D Chestnut Gelding.

Any advice on inhand showing, can he wear a white halter etc etc, would be much appreciated. Also does anyone know of any "Runner's" in the Warrington area who would take him in a class for me please??

Thankyou xxxx

He's a bit old for a white headcollar /halter and should really be in a bridle. As for runners, I'm not sure I know anyone in the area but I'll keep an ear out. What kind of shows are you looking at doing?

If hes a gelding he is allowed to wear a white halter, i took mine to his first show last summer when he was 3 and he was well behaved and won the class, they are usually so busy taking every thing in that they keep relatively quiet.
Other advice is practise with him in the halter before so test your control

to be correct he should defintiely be in a white halter ;)

only reason why not is if you dont have enough control in one.

Ditto this...Welsh breeds of all age are shown in white halters, stallions being the obvious exception :o

A good cob whip is also useful for running a D in hand, you really need to move like s*** off the proverbial :D

Aww thankyou for your comments, Im still abit confused lol.

Was thinking about the halter because i really want to get the dentist out before i put the bridle on him again, he's teething and the last few times that he's had the bit in he seems to get annoyed and i dont want to upset him anymore until the dentist has been to see him.

He's not been to a show before so its more about having a fun day out and letting him get used to the atmosphere. So maybe just a youngstock class for his first show but im interested in him going in the welsh d inhand and ridden classes in the future.

:) xxxx

if you see the classes in Royal Welsh which has the creme de la creme of welshes, they are all shown in white halters unless they are colts over the age of 2. White halter is correct, google images of any of the big shows you'll see how they are shown

To be correct he should be in an in hand bridle, if you dont have one a white rope halter would be exceptable. Not an ordinary bridle though!!

Ha ha in fact its NOT correct for a gelding to wear a bridle!!!!!
Rope halters ARE acceptable!
Look at the bay in my sig with a white halter on.... it was a 4 year old welsh A gelding! Oh and he won :D ;)

so in a mare and gelding class, they were all mares?

At the end of the day if it is only local, it doesn't matter what you show him in aslong as you are comfortable handling him in it and he goes well in it. At the end of the day, aslong as the judge knows what they are looking at the best will always win regardless in what he is shown in. The most important thing is to go and enjoy yourself and don't feel any pressure from this petty squabbling

I would just like to say thankyou for your help and advice.

Ive looked on alot of website's and it does say that im ok to show him in a white halter.

Its his first show, its a small local show so im sure they wont mind him being in a halter, im only thinking about what's best for him coz he's teething so i dont want to upset him and like Mrogers says "aslong as the judge knows what they are looking at the best will always win regardless in what he is shown in."

As a cob breeder i would say it is acceptable to wear either. There are no rules either way with geldings, its up to the individual, how strong the horse is and also could even come down to what suits the ponies head best :)
