If its brood mare I know that you lead with double bridle and reins over the head

This isn't true I'm afraid. If you are using an inhand bridle (for horses aged 3 and under) you use a coupling with leather lead. If you're using a ridden bridle (for horses aged 4 and over) you use normal reins taken over the head (preferably using a bridle with 2 reins).

I think you can get them to stand up better with reins over the head rather than a lead and coupling.

I sometimes used to use a brass chain with a leather lead attached, I had to put the chain through the bit rings under his chin as Axey was so strong!
