Help!! Am thinking of doing an inhand (open) class tomorrow along with a dressage test, what do i have to do for the individual show?? (sorry, im being particularly needy tonight!)

Smart shoes, preferably not boots but jod boots will do. (something you can run in). Smart trousers that contrast with the horse's legs. Your best bridle (no flash loop) and a leather lead rein, same colour as the bridle. The usual is Havana, but if it's local level, you shouldn't be too worried. :)

Everyone enters the ring in single file at walk, on the right rein (ie: pony is between you and the judge as you walk round).

Once the judge has had a good look at all the ponies you will be asked to stand (still in single file) whilst the pony at the front is led at a trot to the back of the queue - remember to halt before you reach the back of the queue and salute the judge, then walk on to the back of the queue.

Once the judge has seen everyone trot out, they will ask everyone to line up (similar to ridden classes), they may ask you to line up in order or may just invite you in any order.

Then comes the individual show. In turn you come out of the line and stand up before the judge - the judge will usually tell you which way they want you to face, whilst they have a good look at your pony.

Walk away in a straight line (at least about 20 paces), turn to your left and make a (small) circle to your right and then when you are back on the same "path" you walked out from the judge on, trot towards the judge, continue trotting past the judge in a straight line (this is so the judge can see how straight your pony moves in trot both from the front and behind), then as you approach the perimeter of the ring, circle right. Some judges then like to see you trot past them, other will turn away as they have seen all they want to. The only way to know what is required is to keep one eye on the judge, or see how long they watch the ponies who do their individual show before you - or watch the classes before yours, as the judges generally follow the same process for each class.

Once everyone has done their individual show, the judge will again ask you all to walk around the ring in single file (remember to keep the pony between you and the judge), so they can call you in in order of placement. Remember to stand to the left of the person placed above you.

Good luck!
