Injection for worming

Yes I am in Ireland and if my vet happens to be visiting around worming time he will give them a quick jab. If not I use pastes as and when needed, they are available from all the Vets, Marts and tack shops. But I have a feeling somewhere I read that new legislation is coming in about buying them over the counter so will need to check that out, unless someone else happens along that knows of any new rules.
 
I honestly can't say as I have only had him do it when he is here for something else and its convenient, so just shoved on the bill and I never check my bill, just pay up. I vaguely remember it wasn't much difference though as he did not charge extra for doing it as I was paying a rather large call out fee, he is miles away from me and only comes this far as a favour.

One of my donkeys was a little tyrant to worm for years and years. About a year ago my son took over their day to day care for me. I warned him he would not let my son near him once he knew it was for worming. Strike me! Didn't the little darling just stand like a lamb, politely swallowed it down and turned and looked at me (the donkey not my son) and I swear he had a smirk on his face! 😅
 
My pony was awful to worm with paste. He liked those tablets that we used to be able to buy though. I wish he could have had an injection, it would have made life so much less dangerous!
 
Dectomax, an injectable ivermectin-like wormer, doramectin, has been available for a very long time. I'm not sure it's licenced for use in horses but has long been used as 2 injections 14 days apart to treat horses for mange. And friendly agricultural merchants would sell it to horse owners. It's very cost effective for use on multiple horses.

Oh ok same stuff as used for mites? I’ve had mine injected for mites with Dectomax some years ago.

My two 11.2hh ponies were awful to worm - I never knew such short little things could rear up so high! My heart sank whenever I saw the paste boxes waiting outside my stables, as it was traumatic for all of us.

Then one day I thought I'd just try it in their feed; they ate Every Last Scrap. It's been that way ever since. I love worming time now! 😂
 
we used to get ivermectin IM for the yard but it isn’t recommended for horses as injection so the new vet won’t do it. Dectomax is for mite control so a vet shouldn’t give it as a worming alternative. This is because ivermectin is so widely used there is a big risk of it becoming useless to worms.
 
Our vet won't give the Dectomax injection as it's not licensed for horses.
I have an Easy Wormer bit which was a game-changer for me. I could actually get the paste in the pony with that. Rather than all over me/the floor/the walls/anyone I had roped in to help me.
