Hi all,

What vaccinations have your horses had by the age of a year old?

Any ideas what the two are that he needs 2weeks before competing at Balmoral? Vet is coming out on Sat, I will obv ask him when i see him but just curious atm as to what they might be.

Mine is 10 months old and has had her complete set now so I'm on yearly boosters from next year.
I'm not sure what they need to compete but I think I heard that to compete they have to have 2 of the 3 - but I could be completely wrong on that - so don't hold me to it.

*Just went and hoked out missy's passport* ...

Okies all the vaccinations missy has recieved are .....

Equine flu & tet @ 5 months old .
Equine flu & tet again 2 months later .
As a yearling(13 months old) she recieved equine flu and tet .

From then on , its a yearly booster .

I would say booty will need 2 jabs .

What did your vet say when you talked to him/her ?

Hes a lovely wee laid back lad by the way and I do apologise about my 2 little terrors

It will be flu and tet jab, they have one and then they have the second one a month later and then one 6 months later and then onto annual boosters after that. It's the same course of jabs no matter what age they are, and if you miss one or are late, you will have to restart from the beginning if you need to keep the passport upto to date for competing.

just to add, i thought that tet was covered for at least 2 years after initial coverage?? not needed annually??

I have to agree with all the above. The passport must be fully up to date with all vaccinations before competing at any national show.

Your yearling must be exceptional with great movement to enter balmoral. It is the creme de la creme of youngstock in northern ireland. Have you shown him anywhere else?

Did you also know that your horse must have been bred in ireland to compete? It needs to have either a wetherbys passport or a IHB passport

sorry, *trespassing in breeding* but why should your yearling be exceptional to enter balmoral?!?

This is what is wrong with showing. Its not for the best, anyone can have a go - for FUN.

Anyone who wants to and is eligible to can enter balmoral. end of.

The horse does not have to be bred in ireland to enter balmoral.

Very true!

I think the 'Fun' aspect of showing has been lost, it all seems like a very serious area of the sport

why do people read things the wrong way? Its simple english. Your colt must be exceptional to enter balmoral - I was saying bootys colt must be exceptional, a compliment.

I'll tell you whats wrong with showing, the fun has been taken out of it. I spoke to a friend whos the top showman in ireland and he totally agrees. He said its hard for new faces to break through and would love and encourage new faces to get involved. He reckons theres not enough of the younger generation taking an interest and he is quite right.
