I'm such a soft touch - first I had a horse dumped on me, now an injured dog!

I have a "pikey" horsey acquaintance - the sort of guy you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of! I only know him and his wife wife via the horse world and bump into him every now and again. I saw him a week or so back and he mentioned he had a JRT (turns out to be a JRT x chihuahua) which went down a badger set and was attacked by a badger and now had a scar down its face so therefore he now wouldn't be able to sell it and was going to "take it somewhere and dump it". Soft touch me says "No, I'll find it a home!!"..........tonight he knocked on my front door, told me he couldn't stop because he'd left the lights on at his stables so had to rush back, and left me with a little bundle on the end of a piece of baling twine! I already had a home lined up for him, so I gathered him in my arms, (he was so sweet and cuddly) and rang the person who was going to take him in. "I'm now cuddling a tiny dog!" I laughed to Catherine when she answered the phone - then I looked on the other side of his face - the "scar" was in fact not a scar - his eye was just one bloody mess! I was speechless. All I could say was "I can't talk, I have to ring the vet".

I immediately rang my vet and took him up as an emergency (although he's been like this for a couple of weeks). I was so angry that when I got to the vet that I burst into tears as I walked in! I felt so stupid! The vet was horrified. The eye will have to be removed (no surprise there).

I'll foot the bill (again - no surprise there!!) and look after him for as long as necessary before I can rehome the little chap - he's only 18 months old and so SWEEEEET!

How can anyone let a dog suffer like this? I thought I could trust my "pikey" friend - how wrong! My daughter's working in a pub tonight and can't wait to see the little dog. She won't believe it when I tell her about him. I'm livid, but what can I do? This guy isn't the sort of person you'd want to get on the wrong side of! What worries me, is that his wife breeds dogs (Springers, JRTs plus others) and he told my daughter today that he's just bought two Golden Retrievers. Now I'm wondering what conditions they're kept it. I just feel so used............

If it was me I would speak to someone else regarding your fears..... i.e: local animal welfare officer..... although explain about your predicament i.e: who he is etc etc.,,

Just spoken to a friend - she reckons I should leave it for a couple of months (ie, let the dust settle) and then report him when it doesn't appear to be linked to me. I'm popping into the vet tomorrow morning and going to take a photo of the eye, which I'll post on here,

You could ask the vet to report it to keep you out of the loop. Poor little pup, he sounds so sweet.... not thinking of keeping him yourself are you!

aww, poor little chap, good on you. maybe you could ask your vet if the Blue Cross would help with the vet's bills as the dog was dumped on you, got to be worth a try. or ask for reduced fees... they will do this, they're human too.
if you have no luck finding him a home, i think i know someone who would probably have him. (friends of mine).

I have five lovely dogs of my own, thank you! (So I suppose one more wouldn't make much difference!) Joking apart, one of my friends (who I hope will have him) has already pledged half the vet fees so I have absolutely no doubts for a happy ending!

But I really must sit and wait until a certain time has elapsed before I can take any action. Another friend is already chomping on the bit for pikey blood!!!

But he's so tiny you wouldn't even notice him! How is the little chap today? Any pics?

I don't blame you for wanting to keep your head down for a bit. Which particular pikey group was it? I think I lived in the same neck of the woods a while ago if I remember rightly and I might know someone who can dob him in without you getting involved if you like

Ahh ! You are kind taking him. I have a JR x chi so can identify with the little chap.

Unfortunately this is an all too common problem, it happens here where I live all the time. My friend works at our local Vets and they bring them in with all sorts of excuses and abandon them frequently. But I suppose at least they do that, it doesnt bare thinking about what becomes of the ones they leave to their own devices or worse.

I hope you find a good home for him.

Surgery was cancelled today since the vets had too many emergencies to fit him in (thought he'd be an emergency!). We went to see him this morning and he was fine - really perky - and we took some photos of his eye whch I am putting on a separate post.

Not only has a friend offered to pay half the vet fees, but someone whose horses I look after kindly made a donation of £30, too!

Also, yet another friend (who has four dogs already) has offered to take him in so, all being well. little Jake's story should have a happy ending!

I think that would be a good plan of action. How lucky is that lil fella to have someone like you to take him in and have him seen to! If only there were more people like that and less people like your "pikey" friend. I hope he gets better soo, he sounds like a brave little chap!

never trust a pikey (no offence to anyone)but all the ones i have ever met as nice as they are they all have been a bit croked. poor dog seen the pics its disgusting and obviously knew it would need vet treatment which is y he gave to you so he didnt have to pay it

my daughter wants to call him Fifi. But the dog is called Jake! i have text the 'pikey' saying" if you have any other
dogs you want to get rid of please give to us" . i know he wants to get rid of a couple of greyhounds....i am going to have about 10 dogs at this rate!!! hes not really a pikey as in living in a caravan, but deals in horses and does this and that..if you get the picture...infact hes very wealthy.lol. but he looks after his horses, treating his in mare foals like Goddess'. He would never send his horse's to dealers/sales but treats his dogs like shite. my daughter is very worried that he has 'bid' on a pair of golden reteivers to breed from, she is a sucker for goldies.
