Injured horse

Im currently in a predicement and wondered if anyone could offer me any advice. Im a keen eventer and have enjoyed it for years. We bought a brilliant horse a couple of years ago who i have been eventing. He went lame late last year and is currently at the hospital and due to have an operation on both stifles. The outlook is good and he should make a full recovery, although may not be able to do what I want to do. He would be able to go on to become a lovely dressage horse as he has paces to die for!! or even just a happy hacker. Do you think I would be able to sell him or would people be put off due to this?

I doubt that you will be able to sell him for more than peanuts until he has gone through his rehab and shown that he can stay sound. Then with a suitable, hefty, reduction for the future risk, you should be able to rehome him if he is a nice person without vices and not too old.

How long is the rehab to get him back into full work? I think you need to add at least six months after that to get any more than a few hundred for him.

Once he is through rehab, back in work and proven sound you should be able to sell him on. His price will depend on his age and exactly what the issue was which required an operation - and in any event isn't likely to be very high. But the fact of the operations itself need not be an issue once he is proven to stay sound in the type of work you want to sell him on to do. Alternatively you could try to look to re-home him as a companion - but you won't be able to sell him for that. Only give him away I'm afraid.
