Injuries - hores related - what have you done?

had a moderate concussion but otherwise I fractured and dislocated both ankles at once. I now have one fused and am havign further surgery in the next couple of months to fuse the other one - definately hasn't stopped me tho

Just to add my latest injury - I'm sitting at the computer with a hot wheat bag draped over my shoulder and upper arm - it's hurting like hell.

What did I do?

Was a writer for three days for the local Showjumping group for around a total of 20 hours writing, writers cramp me thinks!

I am now thinking I am very lucky had lot's of falls including rolls on top of me and riding racehorses and breaking lot's of horses have had no real bad injuries.
I am still breaking every year lot's on a regular so will update you when I have that horrible one.

Do land on my feet quite alot which I have been informed is not good.

Out of interest has having bad injuries put you off riding, my dad has had alot lost his knee cap, lot's of broken bones including back, it has not put him off but he is crazy.

I would be interested to know about loss of confidence or stopping riding after a bad accident.

Trinity Fox - I've become a nervous Nelly now - because I no longer bounce. yet over 50 years I've had very few falls.

I get so cross with myself because I so want to ride but put myself off day after day. I have a darling Clydesdalemare that is so kind I'm sure she'd never drop me on purpose - but I have seen her buck in the paddock - so maybe that is what is puttig me off - she can seriously get off the ground. When a friend declares she never realised how athletic a CLydesdale can be she must have been doing some spectacular ones.

Once I'm on I'm fine. Just the psyching myself up to get on is tough.

Apart from the usual sprains and strains I've had:
Fractued wrist (done the same one 3 times but only 1 horse related)
Fractured knee and leg (somehow managed to get up and walk out of the field)
Broken finger
Concussion
Painful back (constant pain due to riding)
Kick in the wrist
Kick in the chest
Latest one is sporting a black and blue grazed knee from a friends horse pulling me over into the mud.

Not too bad compared to some of you lot:

Multiple concussions
Torn ilia psoas (hurts like a hurty thing)
Broken coccyx
Broken toe (stood on)
Broken pelvis
Broken ribs
Broken tibia (my favourite - got kicked in the shin by a NF when I was nine . . . well I did try to touch her foal . . . muppet)

. . . plus, I sport two fetching scars on my right bicep where the GreyDonkey took a chunk out of me when I was girthing him up (we've trained him out of that little trick).

P

P.S. The toe, pelvis and ribs are all courtesy of GreyDonk, the rest are thanks to other people's horses . . .

Broken wrist x3 - must learn how to fall correctly!
Broken various toes
Broken 2 fingers
Kicked in the face, luckily was standing just far enough away to not need stitches - just a very strange lump and slight concussion.
Torn ligaments in knee when horse bolted through a fence and I caught my knee on the side of the fence.
And for my big finale!
Almost lost my hand in a hacking incident. Fell off horse, horse stood on my hand and my hand began to swell; with the exception of the middle of my hand. It not stop for swelling for 4 days. To this day I cannot understand why the middle of my hand did not swell - my thinking is perhaps stones in her shoes as its left 3 pebble shaped scars?!

Apart from the usual sprained ankles, and very bruised coccyx, I also managed to end up in casualty three weeks into horse ownership with a mucking out related injury... horse was on box rest, and I used rubber gloves to skip out one morning using my fingers to pick up the poo. I somehow bent my middle Finger so awkwardly I detached the tendon, so finger was dangling uselessly. It looked very dramatic, and had to be splinted for 6 weeks to allow the tendon to reattach, but was completely painless :o

this thread could almost put me off riding:rolleyes:

i have been lucky i think;

broken foot 8 places-horse fell over cantering steadily round the outside track of a manege-i did not fall of and when horse hit the floor the stirrup crushed my foot:confused:

broken collar bone twice-no idea when it showed up on xray for something else

broken nose? never had it xrayed so cant be sure-when head butted by youngster

ripped and tore all the muscles across the right front and back of my chest-the most painful by far it was a struggle to breathe for about 6wks-went to doctors on wk 3 as it was not getting any better-cant be doing with the doctors you go in and they tell you to rest-well as i could not breathe believe me i was resting

+ minor bumps and scrapes along the way

2001 - fell off a riding school horse whilst on a hack, got taken to hospital, knew I had hurt myself, but it took the docs 10 months to diagnose 7 fracture in my pelvis, and a broken pubic bone!

2005 - caught reins around my thumb and broke it.

2007 - bringing in from the field, horse reared, got my hand caught up in lead rope and broke my little finger.

2010 - the worst one! Got hit by a car whilst hacking. Fractured t10 - t11 (I think!), bloody painful, and I have never ridden since.

Crikey!

Touch wood but in last 27 years i've only been concussed a coupla times and broken/dislocated my pinky riding out with the local hunt.

Rather embarrassingly I didn't even fall off - popped a toty jump and when I got to the other side my middle pinky bone was halved lengthwise and dislocated at bottom knuckle. 6 weeks before my wedding and causing all sorts of hen night problems since I could no longer go on the planned polo weekend. Ooopsy.

Hmm, been around horses 8 years and apart from tiny bumps and bruises I have had no injuries, thing is I can't help but think one is lurking around the corner!

In and out dislocation and subsequent cartilage damage of shoulder x 2
Fractured vertebrae x 1
Dodgy knee x 1

And the usual bumps bruises and scars :D

For me its the waiting time that makes you cautious rather than the incident, when you have had 6weeks or 12 months away from handling your rather large horses you just feel awkward.

I do remember it took me a long time to feel safe picking feet out, after Ginger rolled on me in the big accident... i kept thinking she would fall on me ! and the nightmares i had for years..... she got faster and faster and bigger and bigger and when she fell she rolled on me more and more.

Best thing about all of this is the incredible adrenalin you get - after every one of my breaks i have carried on doing stuff for upto an hour after the accident... when i broke my ankle first time, i got back on and finished the lesson and then turned out.

The biggie - i took the horse for a cool down hack, rugged her turned out and drove to my hubbies shop - when the adrenalin wore off boy did i know it.

This last one - i finsihed with the vet, finished the horse and the other one before i sat down and realised something was not right - i was going to drive home, but ym refused to let me

So I thought I was pushing my luck writing my relatively few injuries on here.

While not horse related, someone's moron husband left the dust pan and brush on the steps. I came down the steps with a load of laundry, hit the dust pan and just sailed down the last 3 steps. Oddly enough I still had my helmet on because I was ducking in to start the house while waiting for a client. My head was warm so kept it on. Good thing! Finger a bit swollen, and my back muscles are spasming like a good thing. I feel like crap now! LOL!

Sadly, we had to put the dust pan out of it's misery. No chance of healing and even being "light dust" sound.

Gee whiz what are we like;);)

Me I have broken right leg, pushed my foot off the bottom and torn ligaments in the other one.

Dislocated both shoulders

Dislocated left thumb, the worst one ever couldnt even go for a pee on my own:D

Damaged my coccyx.

Numerous concussions/black eyes.

Badly bruised my knee the size of a football, bloody mares:D

I think I have got away very lightly with actual injuries for over 20yrs of riding and particularly SJ. General bumps, bruises, concussions from being thrown through fences into wings etc... Only proper injury is a badly sprained ankle which rather embarrassingly was done dismounting from my 17.2 whilst chatting and just letting myself drop thinking I was on my 16.1

Most annoying horse related health issue though (physio said to give up riding) is due to the muscle I built up on my shoulders from all the yard work as a teenager I now have thoracic outlet syndrome which affects the nerves in my arms hence I wake up repeatedly during the night with pins and needles or nerve pain and frequently drop things. Also became allergic to wood shavings a couple of years ago. Still not giving up my horses!

Been riding since I was 2. Injuries to date:
3 shattered ribs
4 cracked
2 broken
shattered jaw bone and cheekbones (my entire jaw and cheekbones are now made from metal)
torn cruiate (not too sure on spelling!)
shattered both hands, now have no feeling in either.

Most of these injuries were in one dramatic go! not all separately. Very lucky to have only lost my confidence once out of all of these and that was when i was a kid with the most minor of those injuries!! Still adore my horses!!

Numerous chipped teeth.
Hole in my shin from being thrown off and stood on as horse cantered passed.
Mild concussion from landing on chin.
Torn ligaments in ankle.
3 broken bones in my leg/fibula from one fall last year.
Broken back, had to have spinal fusion so the lower 3 vertebrae are now 1 big bone and surrounded by metal scaffolding. Had a fall a couple of years ago which has dislodged one of the screws.
I think that's it so far.... :o

only really had a dislocated knee- going into a stable when the rig in the stable next door grabbed my arm and tried to pull me over it!! thankfully i was wearing a fleece and a jacket so loads of brusing/grazing to my arm and dislocated knee which i put back myself and then had to chase the first horse across the yard since she decided to take advantage of her open door.

I was 13 weeks pregnant and thanks to pregnancy hormones the ligaments in my knee have healed all funny :o

It does make you wonder why we do it! I've been pretty lucky compared to a lot of people on here...

- Removed thumbprint - temperamental TBxID slammed his foot down while I was picking his feet out, catching my thumb sideways between a metal shoe and a concrete floor.

- Lumpy shin bone - neddy had me off by throwing in an unexpected jump and swerve at canter. He caught my shin on the way past and managed to make it bleed through rubber Muck boots. The lump is still there 6mths later.

- Skinned arm / knee / ligament damage. Hit the deck on the road from a canter / buck. Skin went from the inside of my wrist, up round the top of my forearm and round to under my elbow, along with my kneecap. Lot of blood and still have scars today from the deepest bits.

- Scar tissue through my neck, back and shoulders - again, from hitting the deck too many times. Agony in this weather.

Starting from the ground up:

Broken foot from being stamped on
Broken ankle coming off a bolting horse when the girth broke
Broken leg when I fell off over a jump and the horse landed on my leg
Broken back when the horse I was leading suddenly pulled away twisting it oddly. I now have spinal cord damage as a result.
2 broken fingers from being bitten
Broken jaw
Broken nose
Concussion about 5 times.
