Now the big, black, daft one pictured below has injured herself again!!

Poor OH took her for a walk to stretch her legs because there is no turn out and he accidentally let go and she made for her stable accidentally slipping over on her side hippo style, now has a lovely swelling on both front leg and hock with a couple of grazes. To be honest it could of been alot worst.

Now the damsel in distress in in quite a bit of pain and where she banged her legs are swollen. My question is what would you do??

I went with cold hose, bute, treat grazes.

However, I would not bute in this instance until the vet had seen her.

If there is no improvement (reduction in swelling) after a few days, I would get the vet (probably more for my piece of mind than anything else). Although she may be quite stiff after falling like that.

(healing vibes)

xx

I would cold hose and treat grazes but wouldn't bute until the following day so I could assess how lame/not lame she is - if I needed the vet the following day it could mask the ease of diagnosis.

Obv if horse not weight bearing or very sore would call vet depending on whereabouts of injuries

I didn't vote as not my choice there!!! Would treat grazes (make sure u get all of them, ckeck inside and outside of legs all the way up and down) and cold hose. If properley lame tomo call the vet otherwise (IMO and if she was mine) I'd leave her but keep her moving

I'd cold hose and try to keep her moving so she doesn't stiffen up - providing she is not lame of course! I personally wouldn't bute for a day or two until it has settled down and you know she either does or doesn't need any. I think we're too fast to give them painkillers and then when they really do need some they are becoming immune to them or need stronger doses; not good for man or beast to become reliant on them that much. (It might be why mine (male or horses) tend not to be wimps, they know Mother doesn't 'do' much in the way of pain relief unless it's absolutely necessary when it which case they'll get the boat rolled out for them!

I couldn't vote as I would cold hose and treat grazes without giving bute. Like someone above said, unless the horse had been prescribed bute, I wouldn't give it.

I went with Cold hose and heal naturally, but would treat the grazes. The bute might cover up some lameness and by letting her wander a bit it will stop the stiffness as others have said.

Hope she gets well soon

Cold hose and bute to bring the swelling down, and treat any grazes which need treating and leave any which only require fresh air.

Because bute is an anti-inflammatory and the poster, if you read, has said that the horse is very swollen. I don't know anyone who would use bute for grazes.

I voted cold hose and let grazes heal on their own. maybe bute a day or two after to give you a chance to assess if there is any lameness. HTH
