My daughter has a sec a who's too little for me to ride, but to help keep him fit I walk him out in hand, sometimes round the village sometimes further afield - along bridleways etc..

Today as I was leading out I started wondering if I'm covered on his insurance for this??

I looked at his (pet plan) policy and all I can see is ridden activities! He's insured for group 3 ( so hacking, at grass, 25mile pleasure rides, western, pony club, vaulting, le trec, gymkhana, breaking, local shows and schooling)

So would I be insured if there was a problem as he's not actually being ridden?!

Have you asked your insurance company? No one else can really answer this question as there will be variations between policy wordings and interpretations of insurance contracts.

If you're concerned give them a call and ask - better to do it in advance rather than when you really need to know!!
The most common issue is that they have a clause requiring the pony to be in a bridle - if he is then you almost certainly haven't got a problem.

If the pony is covered for hacking (ie being out on the road), it makes no difference if you are leading or riding. Generally the levels of cover are that cover and the lower covers anyway - so your cover should include the activities listed plus say in hand showing, horses at grass etc etc.
I can't see how Petplan or any insurer could state the horse had to be fully tacked up to be lead either to be honest. They'd be hard pressed to argue this should anything happen.

i called and checked- according to the lady on the phone- under there definitions of riding it includes leading and handling :)

Actually loads of them do have a requirement for a bridle (with bit) in the small print as they believe youc can't be in control of a horse without a bit! (or - if your cynical like me - it's another great piece of small print that gets them out of paying)
If you ride in a bitless bridle it's worth checking and having them write to confirm that you are still covered !!

Crazy but true.
