The first thing you need to do when deciding how much food a horse needs is look the horse not the bag of food if heā€™s fat donā€™t give him any if thin then you need to think about how to feed him .
But that is known as being a horseman, vast majority of owners are not. Over the years I have watched liveries pack in every supplement known to man into one horse. Marketing is very clever and the skill of feeding is long gone. Balancers have to be fed at the correct gram to KG bodyweight. One of mine is on Top Spec Senior Lite, recommended by an equine hospital, mixed with a handful of zero chaff and has never looked so well, slim, fit and skin like a fit racehorse. It is a bit pricey but by not needing to buy any other feed it pays for itself easily.
