Has anyone tried using the Insol (jab from vet primarily for use against ring worm) to try and alleviate sweet itch? I have been seeing it pop up in SI discussions on good old (everyone is now an expert) Facebook. I would rather see if anyone on here has tried it, or know someone who has, or are considering it this year.

I am wondering if it is worth trying on my old retired mare this year. I have asked my vet for his opinion, but he has not used it here in Ireland although he has read of its use for SI elsewhere. He is doing some research and asking colleagues in the UK over the weekend.

Any thoughts or experience please?

My pony had it before I owned him and apparently it didn't make any difference. I think sweet itch is so peculiar to each sufferer that you could only know if you tried it. I'm on a couple of Facebook groups and people on there say it's made a big difference. I don't know how expensive an experiment it would be.

Yes that is more or less what I am seeing. And yes all sweet itch sufferers are so different in what works and what doesn't. I am also reading it is a pretty expensive thing to have, but my vet is also looking into that for me.

My thoughts are if it comes out as something around 2 or 3 hundred a year I would be more than happy to give it a go, providing it won't be detrimental to my old horse in anyway. I could stand the financial loss in an attempt to make her more comfortable, if not cure her.

She is old now and showing her age and so I want her to have as happier time as possible in the very few summers left to her.

I hope it works for her. I live in hope that there will be a vaccination for it one day.

Fingers crossed it works for you. Do you mind me asking roughly what it cost please? My vet was a bit guarded as to its effectiveness so I’m still undecided!

Two of the four SI horses on my previous yard had the insol jab last year. As an owner of one of the other two I kept a close eye out. It didn't work at all on one, the other had some relief from symptoms for part of the year and then went back to rubbing.

That said, it has to work for some or it wouldn't be being used - hope Zeus is one of them.

Hi update Zeus had the jab in April 2020and I thought at first it was rubbish but as the summer went on it worked and they should have it in Feb time each year for the best results. So hes having it again on the 10th & 14th Feb with vet callout and prices goes on weight of horse for how much they have last year it was about 350 and that had 2 vet callouts fees in it of £80.00 included. Hes just been clipped so injections may be fun x

Mine's having his first jab on Friday. Our vet says they've had really good results with some horses - but it doesn't help every horse. I thought it would be worth trying for at least one year - I'm keeping everything crossed that it works

Just wondering if you sourced the Insol Dematophyton vaccine in Ireland please? If so what are the logistics of importing it form Europe? I’ve been researching it and consider it a worthwhile trial for a couple of seasons for a horse with SI any information much appreciated.
