Inspired by Black_horse's post. Who would like to ride my horses?

I might notice the longer scramble up

I have ponies for three reasons...

1. Less far to fall
2. Easier to re-mount post-fall
3. Less likely to result in decapitation on overgrown bridlepaths

:D

1 & 2 are why I have found myself a 15hh warmblood and a 15hh TB. Our hacking is mainly wide open fields so decapitation is not so much of a risk but does lead me to wonder why I chose horses which anecdotal stereotyping suggests would either nap or p*ss off with me.... Thankfully they [touches wood] seem to like behaving themselves most of the time.

But agreed, we can all take our own ponies home again afterwards :)

Oooh I'll have him! A pony I can mount without scrambling inelegantly  :D

oooooooh you have mini-WB and mini-TB  That is cool! I could consider dinky versions of them :D Where on earth are you to have non-decapitating hacking? All ours is slightly lethal round here

It's very very lucky for me they are both mini - I got the WB when she was 3 as she didn't grow big enough for the girls who bought her as a weanling and I was given the TB last autumn cos she hadn't grown big enough to race (parents both 16hh) and wasn't big enough for the girl who took her on from the stud. I'm like a midget horse magnet ;)

My non-decapitating hacking is in Kent, near Tonbridge. I miss hills and woods - we have them but I have to box there.

I had no idea East Angular was so dangerous, I've been out in Essex (near Great Dunmow) and Norfolk (near Diss) and they were both flat flat flat flat as far as the eye can see (I have 20:20 vision)

I'll have you know that Norfolk is not flat! It's very, very gently undulating. Cambridge is flat! Norfolk is the best county in the country :D

I'm not far from Dunmow - I've hacked reasonably close to Dunmow at least - and we have decapitating bridleways - though it is FLAT as a pancake (take heed, Dafthoss, it IS flat!)

There's a few of these

A lot of these

And no photos of the worst ones because I'm too busy not decapitating myself  :D

I apologise, I was riding a rather fine cob that I was lent for the day and my eyes were streaming so perhaps I missed the undulations (is that a word?).

I had a lovely time, no disrespect to any of the east anglian counties I promise.

rhino, in your Glasgow days, did you ever hack over Mugdock way? I used to love it there :o

I'd move back up north in a shot!

IT IS NOT FLAT!!!!!!!

this is flat

and I disagree with your 3rd reason for having a pony I still managed to be decapitated and I'm shorter than you :p

I like hills. Unless I have to get up them under my own steam :o They would do me the world of good though...

I'm lazy.

I found that if I hang onto the mane of which ever horse is dragging me up the hill - it's alot easier. ;) If I'm not walking with a horse, then I just stop to 'admire the view' every nown and again. :p

ahhhhh that's my sort of thinking. I often stop to "pat the dog" or "throw his frisbee / tennis ball" too :D

Very devious. :D

Do you think that my bright red face or my loud gasping for breath gives my ulterior motive for stopping away? I think that I just about get away with it.
