Inspired by 'strange viewings': Have you every refused to sell to somebody?

Yup Samba came back as a sweating mess dripping. I suggested that she wasnt suitable and thankfully they agreed(actually said she was a obnoxious and stubborn mare). They rode her in the field before going round the block and looked fine, to this day I have no idea what they did/ happened, they said she spooked at a dog...... I bought her from a lady that bred rottweilers in the stables next to her and my dogs can walk right up behind her with not problem and she has never got that worked up on a hack.

Samba still here, not going anywhere, weve turned a corner and enjoying life right now :D
Some people think it is a good idea to "test" a horse by asking it to do one thing and then another, so that can lead to the horse getting upset in no time.

Yes, twice (although one wasn't a sale, it was for a rider).
Section A yearling that a friend and I bought as a weanling to show in the fullness of time. It didn't happen so we decided to sell her. To my great excitement I had a phone call a couple of hours after putting ad in local tack shop. . . . . . . to my horror what turned up at the field was a 4 x 4 containing,*ahem*, shall we say, a family belonging to the "travelling" community. . . . . . they wanted her as a pet for the wife and cheerfully told me that she would be tethered "up the road" and that they would be walking up the main, arterial road to get there. I was horrified and told them that I didn't think that was a very good idea. She had been walked out on a reasonably quiet lane but a very busy main road with barely a grass verge? Hmm, not a good idea and no way was I letting her go to be tethered. I stalled them initially by saying that the passport had to be signed over by both of us and friend not available until the next day. Their reply was that they weren't bothered about a passport as none of their other horses had them!!!!!! They wouldn't take no for an answer and kept turning up at my field and ringing me so, in desperation, we told them that we'd changed our minds and withdrawn her from sale. She eventually went to a lovely family which was exactly the home we had wanted.

The other occasion was when I advertised for a rider for my mare. I was offering completely free riding and didn't want any sort of contribution other than exercise. Good deal, huh? I only had a couple of replies one of which sounded promising. 20 year old girl who had "been riding for years at a local riding school". She arrived with her mother to see the mare. I gave her the tack to tack up - nothing fancy, just a plain snaffle bridle (no flash or anything) and a GP saddle + numnah. Not rocket science but I could see her looking at the bridle a bit oddly. Mother conversationally asks me how often I came to see/do the mare. Twice a day, I replied. TWICE A DAY????? came the squawked reply, followed by "I woud have thought once a week would be enough". Girl still looking askance at the bridle with obviously no clue as to how to put it on. I suggested, gently, that perhaps she needed a bit more experience . . . . . . . . .

Yes, I did.
I was selling one of my ponies, and when the Mum told me she would be keeping the pony in their garden, on lush long grass, and on its own during the holidays when the children had time for it, then it would be chucked in a field somewhere in the village when the children were back at school and too busy for it....

I found him a wonderful home and am still in touch. :)

Never sold a horse (and hope never have to sell Kal) but when I was horse hunting I did have one dealer who (very politely) said he couldn't let me try the second of the two horses I was there to see - and he was quite right . . . I was far too novicey and the horse was far too sharp. I wasn't offended at all.

Yip I have 3 times with the one horse, one fell off him at the viewing as he was just to much for her and still wanted to buy him. One becasue I didn't like the livery yard she was going to keep him at and the other was just the most obnocious and rude person I had ever met, so took great pleasure in telling her I didn't think she was suited for my horse. Thankfully my pickness paid off and he has the most wonderful home now!

Trying to find a share rider for our Welsh B with a devilish sense of humour was interesting. It will never be easy because he lives on a farm with no school and no one around most of the time but even still.... the ad specified he was not a beginner's ride and would really best suit a small teen or adult.

One of the people we had was an immaculately dressed little girl (she looked like she should have been at the PCUK championships or something), so sweet but had never actually sat on a pony in her life!! I remember feeling really tight explaining that our pony really wasn't suitable and giving them the phone number of a fun local riding school, afik she still goes there!

Best one ever was when I advertised a horse for loan - to stay at same yard, no under 18s, no novices, experienced confident rider req etc. This wasn't an easy horse IYSWIM

I got a phone call from a bloke asking if the could 'loan' him for his future wife to ride to the church on the day of the wedding! First I looked out for the hidden camera because I was so sure it was a wind up. Then while talking to this very insistent man it turns out that neither him or his OH had ever been near horses, had wanted a horse and carriage to the church but it was out of their budget so after seeing a picture of my very flashy cob decided that this riding lark couldn't that difficult even in a big white dress and as he would fit into their colour scheme nicely that he was just the thing. Well, when my jaw came off the ground I tried, as nicely as possible to explain that his w2b would only make her own wedding via a trip to A&E if they attempted to try a stunt like this on my beloved but brainless horse...5 years later I'm still not sure it wasn't a wind up :p

As a very speschul horse I've turned down 9/10 people who wanted him - after all cobs are quiet, aren't they? - everybody fell for his looks and performance but most couldn't deal with him on the ground when he lost the plot...
