I've been looking into cutting down my feed bills so was looking for an alternative to the topspec balancer? Any suggestions or supplements which are good instead of

You could try one of the other balancers. Thing is though, that whilst they may cost less, you need to feed more, so work out to be approx the same as topspec anyway.

How much work does your horse do? I only feed 1/2 the recommended amount of top spec as my horse only does 6hrs a week work - RC type stuff and seems just as healthy as when she used to have the full quota!

A bag lasts 3 months.

My horse is probably in similar amount of work but I am having to increase the other feeds to substitute for weight gain and energy so I don't feel it's doing its job, I should maybe contact topspec for advice

I would think by only feeding half a ration you would be wasting your money - surely it's scientifically worked out so that the horse receives what it needs for hoof growth etc and by significantly reducing this you're defeating the object of feeding it in the first place

Have you thought about the TopSpec All in One powder? It's exactly the same as the Comprehensive Balancer but doesn't contain the protein etc for muscle development & condition. That way you're horse would be getting everything it needs still at a fraction of the price and you can rely on your hard feed for condition.

My vet told me that feeding less Topspec (or any feed) at less than the RDA was a waste of money. Surely the full amount will give the horse everything it needs, not just half

Top spec Lite is cheaper, and is fab.

I spoke to Top Spec, and they said that if the horse was in good condition, then I could 2/3 of the recommended amount rather than the full amount.

i switched my horse to the balancer supplement 365 from equine answers and its fantastic! a £55 tub lasts me about 6 months! my horse looks better on it than he did on the top spec balancer and it has a better spec than blue chip :)

The Spillers balancers are very good and a similar spec to TopSpec. the original is £30 and the Lite is £19.99 :D I swapped over and the horses still look good and have plenty of energy

What is the horse's body type, overall diet and routine?

How much work is he doing?

The TS balancer retails at £36 at local supplier here, the Lite balancer is £26. Having looked at ingredients etc only the other day, it's near enough the same, just with no added sugar etc.
