As novice can't get pony to canter....

I don't agree with this. Said pony has never been ridden with spurs and is perfectly capable of canter if its asked correctly, either novice should ask it correctly or ride something more suitable!

Maddening!!!

have they tried chasing it with a lunge whip first? I am only partically joking - is the problem that the pony won't canter despite being asked, or that the novice can't ask it properly? My Moose won't canter if you are unbalanced when you ask...if i tried spurs on her, i think i'd be on the floor within 10 seconds !

Incidentally, is said novice this son of the other liveries that you don't like?

Ha oh yes they've been through the whole chasing with lunge whip thing. Unfortunately...

I used to wear spurs with my pony when i was 9/10

but he hated cantering - we used to jump everything in trot but needed spurs to canter in dressage tests!

Blimey, NOONE at my pony club would of been allowed spurs..... if you happened to have an arse of a pony you just developed really really strong leg muscles to kick kick kick until the little bugger did what it was told........... not that im bitter you understand LOL

Sounds about right!

I never wore spurs until about 2yrs ago!

lately people coming from other RS's to mine seem to have legs that don't work, looks like they have worn spurs. So instructor is now teaching them either use your legs or you don't get to canter!

I am no novice and am perfectly capable of getting a horse to canter, but my instructor is trying to re-teach me how to ask properly to get a better transition. I can only get a transition 50% of the time when I ask properly, as my legs are not strong enough to ask in that way. Even though I am not a novice and have ridden in spurs before, I wouldn't dream of putting them on in lessons with this instructor - it would totally defeat the object, me learning how to ask properly. Same principle for this novice rider IMO, except less experience so less reason to wear spurs!
It's all about shortcuts for some people

Well actually this is a very good way to help a novice get used to canter and a good feel for it. I would use this method. However I would only do it with a pony that is used to being lunged and asked for canter using the whip and the voice so understood what was being asked.

My sister had some lessons on a mechanical horse when she was rehabbing from her broken ankle, it worked wonders for re-developing her leg muscles, maybe what this child needs rather than spurs. No novice child (or adult) has the stability in their lower leg to wear spurs. Agree with the Ponies UK showing rules no spurs until 16.

Think spurs shouldn't be worn until leg position secure, otherwise they wobble all over the place, so not used correctly or accurately.

Also REALLY annoys me that kids etc are rarely taught to take spurs off when they dismount and at prizegivings. Wonder how many ponies are ridden with scratched spurs and made sore.
