I am based near Newbury and looking for someone my 13 yr old son can have private lessons with on his new pony. He has lost a lot of confidence with his nappy first pony and needs someone who will be sympathetic, but firm (and almost trick him into doing things, so that he's done it before he has time to worry about it!). All round lessons really, to include a bit of jumping just so that he can start going out and doing some little clear round stuff etc. and having fun! We keep the pony at home and don't have any facilities (other than a field), but we do have transport so would like to find somewhere we can box to as that gives him the chance to ride away from home as well. Unfortunately our old (and very good) instructor is too far away now that we have moved. And I can help him with the flat work (when he listens!) but haven't even gone over a twig for years!!
Thanks in advance! :)

Paul Crago would be great, has a lovely school & makes it fun & encouraging for children, he's based in Pangbourne, so 1 junction up the M4 from you. He taught my friends 8 year old daughter last week & she had a ball. Here's his website www.paulcragoshowjumping.co.uk, all looks quite high powered on there, but he's happy to teach all levels, is a great confidence giver & works alot with the flat work too.

The BSJA ( as was ) also recommended Paul Crago for children when my friend rang enquiring about lessons for her son.

He has a good reputation and his wife does dressage so between them you'd have the full package.

You're right, it does look very professional! But sounds like a good recommendation and Pangbourne isn't too hard to get to from us. Do you have any idea (roughly) of the price he charges? Just want to make sure it's not too much before I call. Has been an expensive couple of months with new stables and new pony!! :) Thanks!

Adult lessons are £50, my friends daughter had a half hour which I think was £25, he's very approachable so might be worth ringing to see if he does different rates for children, like 45 minutes or something. I felt really silly when I first rang for a lesson thinking he would only be interested in super riders with mega expensive horses, he's still teaching me 4 years later. Perhaps if your son had a friend to share the lesson, that would bring down the price?? Let us know how you get on xx By the way, Russ at Boomerang had a bad accident a while back so don't know if he is back at work.

Jan Fletcher. She is not a big name but really knows her stuff and can teach too She runs a livery yard at Bournefield farm, Bradfield. She has done lots with the Pony club. Sarah Ward is very good too. She is at East woodhay and would be contactable through Berkshire riding club.
