Grrrrr major rant!!!! Mares renewal has come through from NFU, bearing in mind NO claims made.....its gone up £120....to £724!!! how can they justify that?!?!?! Her value & tack is alot less than shes worth to keep premium down. That was with my 'mutual bonus' of £80 whoopy do. Just got quote with another company (not such good rep for paying out mind) with higher amount for tack & vets fees, works out less than half.....aarrrgggghhhh. rant over :)

Yes but NFU have always had the reputation of actually paying claims. False economy to go to one that doesn't.

That said try KBIS they are great for paying out and usually cheaper than NFU

Ditto KBIS worth a call as good reputation, reasonable prices and pleasant to deal with

Not necessarily true re NFU to be honest - they are being a bit more particular and I guess actually questioning claims more than they used to.

Basically NFU offered a 20% discount for their centenary year - I can't qjuite recall if that was in 2010 or 2009 (time flies at the mo!) but then, like every other insurer they were hit badly with a load of weight of snow claims (ie buildings collapsing) over the last two winters. Coupled with the fact horse insurance makes NO money for insurance companies this has meant they have had to increase their rates to cover their losses. They are doing it across the board - not just on horse policies.

I would get some alternative quotes and then go back to them and see if they can reduce their premium. If not then move (although not to THAT company it sounds like you have a quote from!). Your premium will have more than likely been generated automatically so standard rate increases will just have been applied irrespective of claims experience etc (although ones with claims should have more increases applied) so call them and discuss!

Ive made a grand total of 2 claims in 12 years with them, I only have the essentials, third party, vets & theft, hardly makes me high risk does it?!

I'm with NFU, too, and have claimed more than you.

But I save money by not having third party and theft.

I'm a BHS Gold member, and that includes third party insurance up to £2m or so.

Not insured against theft, as my horse is not the easiest horse... people must be nuts to steal her!

I would highly recommend Petplan. I have my mare insured with them since April 2010. Since then, I have had FOUR claims (nothing to be proud about, I know, but TBs will be TBs!). At least three of these claims will be to the max of £5000. I was surprised when they renewed me last week -I was expecting to be told that they wouldn't re-insure me...and my premium has only gone up £2 per month - to £28 per month.....I really really cannot fault PP whatsoever. There are now a number of exclusions on the policy, but any company would have done that.....
