My new 2 1/2 year old filly arrives on thursday. I am keeping her out at grass for this winter and will start work with her next summer. will do lots of handling and some in hand shows (experiences purposes only!) over winter and through spring. What level of insurance would you get for her and who through? I am not very rich so cannot afford top class insurance with all the trimmings equally I don't want to run the risk of huge unmanagable vets bills or liability costs!! Any advice really welcome! Thanks!

I've got a policy through AmTrust for my 13yo TB who just hacks out occasionally. It only cost me about £100 for the year and she is covered for vets fees

I've not had to claim so I don't know how good they are in that respect, but my other policy for my other horse was very competitive, too.

pet plan and south essex do "at grass" cover, these are ideal for what you need - im not sure but I think there is a limit on on the upper value you can insure the horse for for death but they will only pay the market value anyway. I can recommend both of theses companies, there is another popular company that advertises in all the magazines they will be cheaper but wont pay out if you need them - no point having insurance if you worry they wont pay - PM me if you cant guess who im talking about!! also watch some companies now sell 10 month policies as standard - you dont get as much cover with these if you read the small print. We have just put all of ours on a group policy as we have 4 ranging from a retired 20yold to a 3 y/o at grass. so have done a bit of running around if you need any other info.

Have had a quote from E&L which was good value but have heard less than positive things in the past...... (am I allowed to say that - hope so)! AmTrust also came up with a good quote. NFU I've again heard really good things but came in nearly £100 a year more than the others - but like said if it also comes with piece of mind! Not easy to decide - and never claimed before so don't know who pays out and who doesn't!

Whoever you choose (Im with Petplan for all our animals), ensure the insurance cover starts BEFORE the baby gets on the lorry to come home.

Good point!!

Thumper was insured 10 mins before I turned him out in his field with his new mates. I'd never even thought about travelling him home.......
