I've just had my horse insurance renewal through from NFU. I've had the same horse insured with them for over 10 years without making any claims, but in the last year I've had 2 claims for non-related incidents. One was a cough and the other a bad tooth which has now been removed. Both incidents had complications and cost about £3k each. Well my premium has now been 'loaded' and has basically doubled to over £700 (£500+ being for vets bills cover). I've asked them to go back to the underwriters as this seems unreasonable given that if they'd been in different policy years it probably wouldn't have been an issue. The alternative is I either get a veteran policy (he's 17) and just get cover for accidental injury, or change to a different insurer but I'm not sure if this would be worse given the claims history. Any ideas / advice please?

to be honest im with petplan they cover illness and injury untill 25yrs young, and i wouldnt think it would be that much as they dont incr prem due to claiming at least quote them.

xx

Petplan dont premium load when you make a claim and will insure till 25yrs for illness and injuries as long as insured before 20yrs old... its not the cheapest but if you call for a quote might work out cheaper than what you are currently paying and also if you tell them the previous vets history they can tell you what exclsuions will be placed.

ooo thats good to know about the age thing

i'm with NFU and coming up to needing their "vetran" policies with hitting that age but still competing at everything possible

I've just run a quote through Petplan and like for like the quote came out nearly the same as my NFU renewal.
Any other recommendations for GOOD companies please (I know which one to avoid!!)

My 17 yr old is with PetPlan and won't change as mentioned above, they will keep insuring her for years to come - shes still out competitng and hunting.

My yearling will change when the renewal comes up - I'll look at NFU, Shearwater, SEIB & KBIS.

my boy is also 17 and with petplan, i made 2 claims last year for unrelated things and my premium didn't go up it is £25 per month however his is insured for £500 and activitey group 3. if i insured him for £1000 (which because of his age he isn't worth) it would be £30 a month

I'm with KBIS and made three claims within my insurance policy year that totaled 12K and by premium only went up by a couple of pounds.

I would really recommend them as they're very quick at paying out and very helpful on the phone.
