insurance...after nfu increase

Hi, I use Pet Plan for mine, they have always been very good when had to claim from them. You can look on equinecompare.co.uk for a few different insurance quotes and compare prices etc, its a really useful website.

All insurance has gone up this year. My renewal with NFU went up by about £95 per pony per year in April (no claims made). I shopped around and got a couple of quotes from reputable insurers, which were even more expensive so I stuck with NFU.

Mine is up nearly £20 a month. But so far I've heard most folk are in the same boat. All it means is I can't increase the value of my boy like I had planned to do. Have been with them for years and have never claimed for anything.

NFU's lorry insurance is up too.

My car insurance with them went up double!! No explanation as to why... I've never had an accident or claimed.

Got insurance with Arriva for the car - phew!

As to horse insurance, try AmTrust. I got a really good quote from them, quite a bit cheaper than PetPlan, but Rosie's age was against her.

I dont know if this is treated differently but Ive just increased my NFU lorry insurance to almost double the value and was told no increase in premiums. Have to say I was pretty shocked.

My insurance came through from NFU for 2 horses at £1200, yes i have had had claims for both this year but these will now be excluded! I was even with NFU for 9 years and that had a £150 bonus deducted.

When i looked at my insurance in detail i realised i was paying £74 each horse for public and personal liability £148 in total!!!

I have now removed this off both horses and joined British Horse society as a gold member and got both liability's for £59

I then had a little shop around and have now changed to KBIS and my 2 horses are insured for £800 for the same cover!!

So i now feel very happy for saving myself £600

2 of my horses are insured with NFU, last year it was £750 for both, this year £961. I am definitely changing, both of mine are only insured for £500 too and the Zangersheide is worth a hell of a lot more but can't afford to insure her for anymore :(

How soon before renewal did you get the new costs from NFU - I've got 3 horses, lorry and house with them - renewal date 28th July and not received anything yet??

My insurance doubled!!! :( :( :(

I rang around for quotes then rang NFU and asked for an explaination as I have never claimed (touches wood left right and centre) and I felt that an explaintion was due.... They fed me a load of corporate rubbish and did nothing to retain my custom.... I am with SEIB now although Petplan did also give a very reasonable quote.

I was really worried too as I have a veteran but this was not a problem :D

My renewal with them was due on 20th July and I had my notice come through the post last week.... Last Thurs i think....

They leave renewals until the last minute hoping you don't have time to shop around!!

I'm with SEIB always have been. good value and pay out fab too

Mine horse insurance is due 3rd August and got my renewal today

I came on here to do the same as the OP as mine has gone from £338 to £452!

I wouldn't mind but he's only insured for £2000 on a low class as we only do hacking and schooling!

Another vote for SEIB - moved my horse and lorry to them after NFU put my premiums up by several hundred pounds (after no claims).

You have to wonder what they are playing at really!?

Its such a shame as they are really good and have a good rep (NFU that is) but I refuse to be ripped off! :(

Funny how diff people get diff quotes.

My NFU renewal was up £150 (and part of that you have to take into account the doublt mutual bonus we had last year)

I rang around several. SEIB and Petplan was more (Petplan by nearly £200!!!!). KBIS £20 less but wanted her vetted as worth over £3000 so that wouldn't be worth it.

Stoneways were little less again and Amtrust just over £100 less, but again they wanted her vetted.

So I renewed with NFU. No other company was worth it and they are an excellent company to deal with.

i did this but with WHW and became a champion plus member and got way more cover for much less money than NFU

you got the same service as me - insurance hiked up for no reason and no explanation for it either its like they want to lose customers at the mo. they didnt even try to retain my custom.

me too so i went and found alternatives and have better cover for alot less money - crazy!!
btw im with carriage house now

I have read on here about lots of people leaving NFU and you have to wonder why this has not motivated them to try and retain loyal customers!? I was really disappointed that they did nothing to try and retain my custom and I had had a policy with them for five years with no claims. Admittedly they were always a little bit more expensive than what my friends said they were paying but I always let the NFU's reputation convince me to stay with them. This is why I am so disappointed that a) my premium almost doubled when it came to renewing regardless of the fact I have never claimed and b) they did not even try to retain my custom.

Dont get me wrong I am not expecting them to bow down and reduce my premium by massive amounts but I fail to see why they nearly doubled my premium when I had never claimed and had been a customer for five years - Sad really :(

I'm with NFU for my 2nd year. I was paying £45 per month, now paying £54. I questioned them over the increase, and the increase they put down to the rise in VAT up to 20% and the increase in insurance premium tax, so they have not actually increased my insurance really (and a new saddle too, which put it up a few pounds), the tax has done it. I also have a claim that is still running too, which is at around £3000 in vet bills, and whilst I have shopped around and got cheaper quotes, I can not knock the NFU for the way they have dealt with my claim from day 1, they have been excellent. Because of this, I was happy to stick with them for peace of mind, and the excellent staff who are horsey minded and not just someone sat on the end of a phone. Thumbs up for NFU.

My car insurance went from £600 to £900 this year an I'd made no claims. I have a new horse and I pay £450 for him Petplan quoted me £900 for the same cover. NFU say they dont make any profit on horse insurance, that's why they try and get you to take out multiple policy's like house insurance etc. I changed my car insurance after being with them for 10 years. But I will keep the horse insurance as I'm now claiming and have in the past and found them prompt with paying out.

Having said this, if goes up loads again next year, I think I will seriously shop around :(.

I agree thats why i went with them as they have been prompt paying out and also some companies refused to insure him as he is an irish TB who raced for 7years.
They have insured him and the good thing i though was they wont strike the entire leg off if injured just that area. Howeve im not sure its worth that much! He is also only insured with them for hacking/schooling.

After a lifetime of insuring my horses, I have taken the plunge and stopped their insurance. I have personal liability insurance through a breed society and any bills will now be my responsibility. Time will tell whether I am being wise or foolish. As a retired person with financial stability and semi-retired horses, I feel my existing savings plus the saving in premiums should cover most bills over a ten year period (yes, I do know how much major surgery can cost). My vet knows me and is happy with my decision. I know this would not be a good move for a lot of people in this financial climate though as jobs can disappear overnight and young families cost a lot to keep.

I have this to look forward to then :( :(

And I've just claimed :( :(

TBH, I found SEIB to be slow at paying out and Petplan are just alround rubbish. Not looking forward to having to shop for insurance when I get my renewal through then! :(

I have been with Petplan for the last 3yrs, they are the only ones that would insure my 20yr old gelding for more than physical injury. I have had no problems with them, they are helpful and pay out quickly. They have now paid out on 3 claims totalling around £8.5k and my insurance only went up £5 per month.
