Sadly I had to have my new horse put to sleep on Monday after only 7 weeks of ownership due to colic :-(
Vets asked me to contact insurance as soon as possible so they were aware so I did this on Tuesday - spoke to a lovely lady who talked me through what to do about claiming and then said she would cancel the direct debit so no more payments went out.
Didn't think much of it at the time due to what I was going through but having sent the forms off to the vet yesterday I am just wondering if it is right that my direct debit has been stopped?
I'm claiming for nearly £2500 worth of fees (minus excess) but have only paid two months worth of a little over £200 insurance annual policy. Can anyone help with whether this is correct or if I should be ringing them tomorrow to query/check? Thank you in advance

Sorry to hear about your horse.
I don't know how this works with the insurance but it sounds ok that you wouldnt need to keep paying dds until its been all sorted.
Give them a call to check but Im sure its fine if thats what they advised.

Sorry to hear about your loss,
I lost mine suddenly to colic also, we contacted the insurance the same day to inform them. They said we needed to keep paying to DDs until the claim had been processed then they would pay back the money, we then spoke to another person the next day who said to cancel the DD. So my mum did, hense a letter arriving on my doorstep saying they would not pay the claim as we had cancelled etc, que a tearful/paniced conversation. Apparently it was a letter that gets sent to anyone who cancels a DD! They paid out in full after a vets report a few weeks ago and they also contacted me through here to make sure everything was okay!

Sorry about your horse.

When I claimed years ago with what was Norwich Union but it was taken over by Pet Plan, I was paying monthly and I had to pay the full year premium before they would pay me out at all. That also happened when we claimed on a car, we had to pay the full premium before they would pay us out so I really would check for sure tomorrow; you don't want to have any more hassle at this upsetting time.
Now that I pay yearly I don't have that problem because I did find it a lot of hassle with them insisting I had to pay it; daft thing was I didn't have him insured for very much but just for the vet cover so I got it all back and a bit extra, it just seemed a beaurocratic administerative waste of time and resources but at a time when the last thing I wanted was a hassle. Insurance is meant to make it easy for you and that is why I went to KBIS who are all horsey people themselves so know what you're talking about and have never given me a minute of hassle even when claiming.

Hope you get it sorted.

Hi sorry for your loss.

My first pony had to PTS after we had owned him for just 5 weeks this was some years ago and I'm sure the first DD was just out of my parents account, we kept paying the policy and the insurance company paid out in full very quickly.

Thank you to everyone for your replies....I will give them a ring tomorrow to double check their policy. Just don't want to end up struggling through a claim on top of everything
