My TB was insured with the NFU and I claimed quite a lot of vet's fees for him for treating his back and hock - it was counted as one claim and I didn't claim for anything again. This was in 2009. I have since had 2 other horses insured with the NFU which have now both been sold but the NFU just added them to my policy and no questions were asked as it were. I didn't claim for either of them.

I have got another horse on loan at the moment and when I rang yesterday about insuring him, the woman said they would have to pass it on to the underwriters because I made a large claim for Happy. Why is this when I didn't have to do this with the other two horses which I have had since?

I am quite confused!! Happy has now been pts - I didn't claim for loss of animal because I didn't think it was worth it.

this has happened to me before to because you have a few horses on your policy sometimes they check up on how many horses you are allowed to have on 1 policy. however they should let you insure him and if they dont i would ask for a written explanation why this is and if you dont get a good answer i would look for another insurer. horse and rider is a insurance company i would highly recommend if you keep having problems with yours. they are very helpful and have a fast pay out if you claim.

NFu and a lot of other insurers have now realised that's it's quite hard to acutally make a profit on horse insurance so are tightening up their procedures.

im with PP and my horses have seperate policies.
If i claim for an injury they wont insure for that condition in that area again. Im not sure as why they have gone to the underwrites - it could just be the economic climate. xxx

Spoke to NFU who want me to pay £39 per month for vets fees for a horse that is worth £3k.

Pet Plan were going to charge me £51 per month for the same.

I can't believe how much it has gone up. It cost me £25 to insure Happy when I first got him and he was worth £2.5k.

I almost think its better to keep the money in the bank and pay for disasters yourself!!

But do make sure you have legal liability though if through BHS or similiar. I actually was really happy with NFU - just taken veteran cover out on my old mare (21) who has the start of cushings and she is insured for £500 and £3000 vet cover with no pre existing conditions removed. Cost me £180 per year which I thought was worth it (includes theft, straying and public liability as well)
