I am making an insurance claim for the theft of my trailer, and although I have filled in all the appropriate claim forms and supplied the police crime number, my insurance company have told me I need to pay £75 (payable direct to the police) so that they can get a copy of the crime report from Cheshire police.
I've never made a theft claim before, but I've never known anyone else have to pay to get the crime report. I assume I'm going to have to do this otherwise I'll not get any money, but I feel like I am being ripped off. Im the victim of the crime and it would seem the police and the insurance company are making money out of my misfortune. What do I pay my premium and taxes for eh ?
Anyone else had this issue ?
 
um, probably shouldn't say in case the thought police tell me off..... but they have the initials e & l !!!

I asked the police for a copy direct. they won't release it do me, something to do with classified information. they told me the insurance company would have to come to them direct if they needed it.

So, the insurance company wrote to me telling me to sign the consent form and enclose a cheque.
 
thought so just been through 3 claims with them as well took forever but i never paid a penny until after they paid out for it all then what they wouldnt pay for i had to afterwoods.
 
Unfortunately your insurance company have a dreadful reputation. Keep everything in writing, don't discuss anything over the phone and keep chasing them as they have a reputation for trying to wriggle out of claims.
 
That's an odd request! From the police I mean- I've never heard of a charge for YOUR police report...? In all honesty I don't think it's a problem that your insurers are asking you to pay- in fairness, they don't even know at this point if they will pay your claim and you are expected to pay for anything like that in connection. I would approach the police again and demand to know why it is not free.
 
Acc to Avon and Somerset police website YOU can submit a subject access request and get the report for a nominal fee, however insurance co would be charged £79 approx.....so for once Im not sure the ins co is ripping you off but the police are indirectly ripping you off possibly and the insurance co arent highlighting that there is another way round it.

They will prob take the view that when they insure you they get your agreement (it will be in the stuff you signed) that you let them handle everything, ie they stand in your place in any legal proceedings/police/court stuff. Which is fine, except police then treat it as a commercial matter and charge acccordingly

I would go back to the police and confirm whether you can do a subject access request for the info (but dont take any flannel), and then confirm how long it will take and then go back to E&L and tell them that you will be providing the report. They will probably try to say they will only accept it direct from police but keep at it.

TBH Hopefully the bigger prob wont occur later on when they get to actually writing YOU a cheque...
 
just another thing, I didnt mean to suggest you are in Avon and Som, its just that was the first site I found with any clear info.

this racket is a bit like police charging people £OOs to get their own cars back after they are stolen, very bad
 
E&L have the worst reputation going and have had this bad reputation for 20 yrs that I know of..

Great at taking your money , useless when it comes to claims and having to pay out.

Your best bet is just to get this claim over with and change insurers
 
I'll try and get the report direct from the Police I think.
I have the horse insured with Pet Plan, but I thought the trailer would be safe enough with E&L, although I was aware they weren't the best.
I will be changing as soon as the claim is resolved.

Just seems unfair to be a victim of crime yet the people who are supposed to help you (police and insurance) can't seem to be bothered and are only interested in taking your money.
