I took my claim form down to my vet yesterday to be completed, as treatment is about done now - thinking it would need to be filled out when he was all sorted (he being horse!) as OH was driving, I was idly scanning the form and saw in the small print it had to be back with the company within 90 days.. I requested form on 13th/5, so, you guessed it, has to be with them today! I rang the company and explained that my vet is actually on holiday until Monday (he is!) and they said well, sorry but...!!! Feel a bit stupid for not seeing that bit first :-( another vet has it to look at and hopefully fax to them, but even if it's with them today they said they can't promise anything... how bad do I feel!

oh good grief, our first vets didnt send ours off for 3 months but luckily there wasnt a time limit on ours, ive done the same thing with missing bits on policies, they never make it easy to find however

I'm sorry but this seems like a load of rubbish and i would take this up with the insurance company. Yes, really you should notify them asap but them saying you only have 90 days is a tad tight!!! I certainly would not give up on this one, yes they have put this in their small print but as long as you have not intentionally delayed notification then I would continue with your claim as you are doing.

It is quite common with horse insurance for owners not to submit a claim form until the treatment has reached a level by which they feel the costs have built up and the insurance company will have it happen alot.

It is something to be aware of though - make sure you read the terms of the policy when it comes to claiming.

I think if you get the vet to verify everything for you with this you will be ok. If you requested it back in May they were aware there was a potential claim coming so they should have noted their records accordingly and realistically, if their diary systems etc were efficient they should have sent you a reminder or similar about getting your claim in.

I am sure you will find they will pay out but you just may be asked a few questions regarding the delay.

Thanks all.. they were pretty adament on the phone that I had been told when i requested the form (no, I clicked a button online and printed it off) admittedly one followed via mail too! Ive kept them up to date today, but they said they couldn't promise anything! Anyway, I heard from the vet that one of the others had completed the form and faxed it to the insurers; I called them straight away, (about 4pm) and they said - oh, well it won't be logged as received if it came in past 12noon - to which I went very quiet... but the lady was really helpful, and went looking, finally called me back to tell me it was logged as received, was ok as just in time and would be processed but my god I will be watching this one in future! My first claim!

Good, glad to hear it seems sorted. That's about right that it's unlikely to be logged until later that day/ the next day as you can imagine they are very busy. However, logged items would be recorded from the date/time they are originally received anyway.

Hope your claim continues without any more issues.

Hi all,

Well, as an update, I got the claim form in, spoke to the insurer, and they really were extremely good - so much so the cheque arrived today. I can continue to claim for all the remedial farriery and medicine for 365 days from the onset, and put the invoices in as and when. I know I didn't name the Company at the time, as I was aware they had had some bad press, and the company I use, while I hadn't realised initially, were an on-line subsidiary. But - absolutely no issues with the speed they have dealt with this. I know the amount they are paying the vets, and it seems to be a bit less than the total minus excess, but will have to wait and see for the full statement arriving with the cheque! So, so far, so good!
