Ive been really unlucky with my horses (none of which were my fault I hasten to add) and have lost four horses in just under 7 years. In all cases the insurance companies have paid out but the first did quibble (they are renown for this and I don't really want to name them - lets just say their name is made up of two initials - I am sure you will get my drift) the second and third Pet Plan and the fourth NFU. I have to say my NFU insurance is wonderful. I pay £46 per month which covers my horses value of £7K death due to illness accident, £5k veterinary fees, approx £600 per tack, rugs etc and a trailer valued at £1200, personal liability, and the other usual things including theft/straying. After shopping around for loads of quote on renewal (not because I was dissapointed with my renewal premium but because it does pay to shop around) NFU were still the most competetive insurance company by far. I also went to Sports Cover Direct for rider insurance as I was competing BSJA at the time and was concerned that if I fell off and broke my arm and couldn't work (being a secretary/typist) I would not get paid as I was a temp at the time. Obviously horse insurance cover includes rider insurance also but its usually if you lose an arm or a leg, or an eye/hearing in an ear, etc, etc. Usually with a riding accident you break something which horse insurance won't cover unless of course you take out rider insurance separately.

There are many really good insurance companies, NFU being one of the best. The majority that advertise in H&H are good however there have been many negative posts on this forum regarding E&L & their less than willingness to settle claims.

I've found NFU and Petplan both very good in settling claims. Also if you speak to your vet they have many dealings with insurance companies and could recommend ones to use and ones to avoid.
