know is if she gets Colic badly next time are the insurance not going to pay out because of this episode ?

I haven't had much experiance with this sorry

I think you need to inform the insurance compamy of this episode, even if you don't claim.

If you do have another episode and claim, the insurance company will more than likely ask for a history of their visits to you. If they see previous colic and know nothing about it, they may well not pay out. That said, they may just exclude it if you tell them anyway.

Looks like it's a lose, lose situation.

If it's Petplan I think you will find they will exclude it if you tell them, but you are obliged to do so. My horses have such a long list of exclusions I almost need a continuation sheet.

Which leads nicely to the question - what is the point ?

A friend has mentioned DPA and the vets not being obliged to tell the insurance company (She has had 2 claims for Navic this way)

Also - not that I would do this - but what is to stop me swapping vets ?

If you read the small print of your policy you are almost bound to have to tell your insurers even if you do not make a claim. You will almost certainly get an exclusion but some companies will review this after a year if there is no repeat of the problem.

I would doubt that the data protection act will cover you as the insurers can ask for prior history and may well be suspicious if you change vets regularly.

I know this will sound prissy but by not advising them, if required, and you subsequently make a claim you are effectively defrauding them.

Thanks for that !

I have no plans to defraud my insurance company, it was just something that was raised in conversation.

I wouldn't want to change vets either I changed from Ashbrook to Wright and Morton 5 years ago and they are nothing short of brilliant - They have a free zonal scheme for things like jabs etc and the day depends on your location - my last vets bill before this one was £11.31 !
