Has anyone experience of claiming (and obtaining) death of horse payment from their insurance company? I have been advised that the horse needs to literally have a leg hanging off for the insurance company to pay out.

My horse is really poorly and has been given a 50/50 chance of pulling through due to an antibiotic resistant wound. He has had aggressive surgical and antibiotic treatment, with little effect, in the past 4 weeks, cannot weight bear on the limb in question and has a horrible discharging wound. My vet agrees that if in 10 days time there has been no progress then he should be PTS on humane grounds but reckons I will not qualify for death of horse payment as it does not meet certain criteria.

Can anyone give me some advice? I have run up a huge vet bill (over and above what I am covered for by my insurance), am beside myself with worry and after the news I have had today this adds insult to injury.

Poor horse - it sounds like he is really suffering. (((Big hugs to you and your horse)))

I think that loss of animal claims have to be as a result of accidental sudden death or as a result of the horse being put to sleep on humane grounds.

Why not give your insurance company a call and explain the situation. They should then be able to advise you on what would be covered under their insurance policy.

I would think that if your vet says he needs to be PTS on humane grounds then you would qualify because their is no other alternative. Insurance companies only seem to query death of a horse if there was a chance they could lead a "happy" life with alternative treatment. i.e if the injury meant the horse could nolonger be ridden and the owner wants tio have it PTS as it is nolonger any "use" then they wouldnt pay because it can still lead a happy life alive.

I sorted an insurance claim out for my friends horse who had a similar type of wound after being hit by a car. The vet decided under humane grounds he needed to be put to sleep and the insurance didnt query anything and paid up.
