around janurary 2010 my mare had a VERY minor bout of colic. she showed a bit of discomfort around her stomach, though had still been eating and going to the toilet. however, i obviously I had the vet out and he gave her an injection to relax the gut, and she was totally fine later on in the day.
cost so little i didnt need to claim on my insurance (well under £100 for injection and call out) and have had no problem at all since with stomach pain/colic or anything else since which is good

.....
however, i have been trying to change my insurance policy as i am paying £50 a month for pretty basic insurance for my mare who i basically just hack, school and go to the occasional show with which i think is a little much, and they have just upped the monthly cost despite never having claimed in two years.

but, the insurance company i was looking into will not cover any colic my horse may get in the future as i mentioned she has had it in the past. i will be saving around £30 a month on this insurance but I can't help worrying that i would not be able to cover the costs on my own if she were to have a serious bout of colic.

does anyone know of any insurance companies who will cover an injury a horse had previously? I would not mind if the excess was increased because of said problem, or if i had to pay a little more each month for it to be included but I would like the peace of mind knowing she is covered if the worst came to the worst

thanks for taking the time to read, know it was long winded but wanted to cover everything ;-)

If you read the small print of your current policy there is probably wording to the effect that you should advise your insurance company whenever you have the vet out (except for routine jabs) whether you are making a claim or not. It is highly unlikely that your present company would cover you for colic as they will most likely ask your vets for a full history with any claim you submit.

Unfortunately it is very unlikely that you will find any company that will cover you for colic. Your best bet may be to contact your current company and have your vets provide a statement regarding how mild the colic was to see if they would be prepared to ignore it and not put an exclusion on your policy. Unfortunately colics can be VERY expensive and insurance companies are wary of them.

Your best bet is to wait a year from the date of the colic, then get a vets letter to say they see no reason why it should recur - I've done that to get exclusions lifted in the past.

Also, do try AmTrust - they underwrite themselves and are usually very sensible about exclusions. I had a horse insured with KBIS who had treatment for ulcers. They wanted to exclude his entire digestive system - bonkers - he was kicked in the head this year, and needed jaw x-rays - these would have been excluded under the KBIS exclusion because the teeth are part of the digestive system, despite it being completely unrelated to ulcers and a total freak accident. Luckily I had swapped to AmTrust who paid out no quibble and who have only excluded ulcers and anything caused by ulcers (which is fair enough).

Good idea.Im doing that with E&L they said to get a letter from my vets (vet needs to see horse first),E&L told me they will consider removing the exclusion.. Had no problems, payed out on claims.

Wow thats crazy!!! excluding the whole digestive system after treatment for ulcers ... that is taking it to another level!
I totally understand that insurance companies have to be careful about reoccuring illnesses (which i guess colic is one of the more common ones) but it does seem silly that they don't (mine at least) inquire about the severity of said illness before totally ruling all colic treatment from the cards.
thank you for that though, am now going to look up AmTrust and possibly get a quote from them, or else ring my vets and see if they will write a note for me as its been 18 months since the colic occured.
thank you :-)
