As title really, need to insure the new boy and would like some opinions before I pay up! Don't want to do anything too onerous, a little bit of everything at a low level. If anyone has any suggestions for good companies or heads up for ones who just make things difficult, I'd like to hear about them.

Hope this doesn't break any rules. Did search but couldn't find anything, apols if it is a regular question!

DO NOT USE E&L!!!!!!! Petplan are good, not the cheapest thought but you get what you pay for. NFU used to be great but not now and are VERY expensive.

Stoneways; I can't rate them highly enough to be fair. Great phone service, reasonable premium, quick payouts.

Nfu paid out without quibble on my horse that had a series of problems, ending in PTS. Made the whole process easy, so have insured new horse with them. Price was comparable with other companies I rang.

I have always insured my horses with NFU. They arent the cheapest, however you need to compare the policies really as there are lots of differences.

I had an issue with NFU on a claim for one of my horses; they listened, read the vet reports and then sorted it all out for me. That is the kind of service you are paying for IMO. Its no good going for a cheaper company and them refusing to pay out or making the whole process so difficult. It is hard enough having a sick horse than to have to fight about the insurance as well.

My horses are with NFU, they've been great in the past when I have had to make a claim, were very professional and had it sorted pretty quickly.

My pony was with PetPlan. She had an ongoing problem which resulted in her being pts. The first time we claimed they had a little quibble as she was excluded for something they thought was similar, but after vets confirmation they paid out. The second time we thought we had used up all the vets fees we had insured but they said that because it was a different claim (even though it was for the same thing) and within a year of the first claim, they paid out for all of that too! And they then paid out when we had her pts.

Will most definitely be using the for my next equines!

Stoneways - been very, very good with numerous claims, very fast payout, vets are happy to deal with them directly (which says a lot!) and cheaper/comparable premiums to most others.

NFU have just paid out for vets fees and will continue to cover treatment up to £5,000 for 52 weeks from the date of onset of the problem. They aren't the cheapest, but you get what you pay for and my vets reckon they're amongst the best for paying out.

Most monthly premiums are based on the value of your horse, so be realistic about value. He/she may be worth the world to you but the insurers will only pay out a proven value on death or loss opf use.

Whoever you chose, read ALL your policy documents VERY carefully!

my vet advised KBIS as said they are great at paying out. NFU and Petplan are expensive and i had a friend that went through the mill and back to get Petplan to pay up on a long term virus claim.

Vets told me to avoid E&L like the plague!

I'm with NFU who were very helpful and efficient when my old pony broke his leg in the field and had to be PTS. not the cheapest but after personal experience I'd say it's worth it

Do not touch E&L or any of their associate companies (read the small print) They have ghorrendous reviews and are subject of more adverse posts than any other insurance company BY FAR!!!

Although NFU have been a very good horse insurer many people moved from them around 12 months ago because their premiums went through the roof.

SEIB, Bbis, Petplan & numerous others are all good, just get a quote from each of them.

NFU not the cheapest but they have been very good and I have had 3 claims over 5 years and am in the middle of one at the moment.

They pay the vets direct and they even advised me when I called up of all the things I could claim for including the alternative husbandy for my pony whilst on box rest and for alternative treatments as well as vet fees.

I have been very impressed with them so far in all my dealings.

Hm, KBIS seems to be very reasonable. I selected Platinum vet cover to see what the difference in the premium was, and it's vastly cheaper than gold and only a shade more than bronze... That's very odd.

Wondering if I should buy it now quick before they see they've made some sort of mistake!

Thanks very much for all your tips too.
