Hi - my 2 horses have been insured with Insurance Emporium for years - when I took out the policy I was offered to 'Dental' as an extra option/cost, and wanting to be fully insured, I paid extra for this.

Now that I need to claim, it turns out that the 'dental' I've been paying for wasn't for the horse, it's for the rider! I'd already paid extra for 'Personal Injury' but I guess that didn't include dental!

Really???!!

Oh heck 😳.

What does it say in the small print of the policy?
On page 26, section 3 it says that it's for the rider. Silly me for not reading that bit!
You'd be very grateful if you were me! I got a mouthful of hoof when I was 19. Paid thousands over the subsequent years!

Hope you manage to get your horse sorted.
Oh wow, poor you - that sounds horrid!
It's more that the insurance company totally mislead, unless we have a couple of hours spare to read the small print.

Oh, boo.

Sorry for being nosey, but what dentistry does your horse need? My 17yo mare had a very unbalanced wave and shear mouth, needed fillings on 109/110 due to decay plus 402/3 to be extracted due to being infected and dead, and the bill came in at around £1500. Two long home visits of c 2 hours each with standing sedation for the procedures, and then several post extraction check ups.

Still spendy, but a lot less than it could have been. Mare is doing really well now.

I would assume if a call operator asked if I wanted dental cover on an animal policy then it was for the animal!

It's worth putting the facts in writing to them (keeping the emotion out) Insurance companies do have a responsibility to treat customers fairly and unless they specifically told you it was human cover this sounds odd.

Have you got a recent renewal notice? Check wording on that

I am still insured with them so after previous experience of how much dental work can cost I’m a bit worried to hear this 😳
Well I'm glad I've posted this then because yesterday they confirmed that as a company they do not cover dental for horses at all - not even at an extra cost - they do cover dental for other animals though, just to keep us on our toes!

Hi - I did it on line unfortunately. I have put all my concerns in writing and waiting to hear back from them.

Well thank god my horses dental issues happened back then! That's annoying. I do have a different horse now so hopefully he will be ok but certainly one to bear in mind.

I think if people put hands on hearts, majority would say that they do not read every page of the small print.
No, Its where i came unstuck with Emporium some time ago. I thought my horse was fully insured and when he got ill told the vets to do anything they could, turned out- small print. Since turning 17 or whatever it was a few weeks previously he was then only insured for accidental injury, not illness. That was a sharp shock. I'd not have done anything differently but i was gutted at the time to realize i wasn't insured for the bill I'd just racked up.

I am with these for my old boy. It does state on the online form you fill out it is for the human not the equine. As i took it out for me as thought it would be worth it. Wasn't much extra a month.

Some companies don't cover dental, NFU does...as long as you have routine rasping etc to make sure you are looking after their teeth.

Insurance Emporium paid out over £2.5k for my boy to have 2 nasty fractured teeth removed about 3 years ago. It said in the small print they wouldn't pay out for "10. Costs as a result of tooth or gum disease including the removal of wolf teeth" however they paid for his treatment with no quibbling. I was pleasantly surprised I must admit!

They just paid out for my boy who was in for a headshaking issue when they found a fractured tooth as it was not as per the quote above caused by gum disease they paid out, as it turned out it was not cause for the headshaking either!

They paid for removal of fractured teeth and tidying up the gums etc afterwards £1500 approx
I then maxed out a claim for the same horse a year later for EORTH which definitely should count as gum disease I'd have thought, I was happy they paid that one but simply because i expected to be told dental was excluded due to the first claim.

Hi that's really good to know - I might mention this to them - how long ago was this?

Agree with this - I wrote to them about a charge, and they agreed only the vet hospital could have dealt with it, so they covered the cost. Always worth politely asking!

I wonder if this is where it’s gone a bit wrong?
OP was your horses dental work carried out at home or hospital?
