Insurance excess - how does it work?

I've got a very large vets bill that has gone over the 5k limit on my policy. I know I have a 250 excess. Does this mean that for a 5500 claim I pay 750 and the insurers pay 4750 (the 5000 minus the 250 excess) or do i pay 500 and the insurers pay 5000? If anybody knows it will help me understand how long to plan for a bread and rripping existance!

I think you pay £500 being the excess and the balance over £5k. I think that’s what happened with mine but it was quite a while ago so I might be wrong.

You pay 250 plus anything else over your limit. If your total bill is 5500 them you'll need to pay 750.
