My horse is now 15. He's uninsured but I'm now going through a divorce and want him insured. I claimed 3 years ago for his kissing spines surgery so there's already been a claim on him.

Is it possible to insure a horse of his age? If so who do people use?

It is certainly possible to insure a horse of this age. What are you planning on insuring for- vet cover / death / public liability / etc?

If covering for vet fees his spine will be excluded and possibly other things to. Think what you would be prepared to have done eg. would you do colic surgery. A number of companies offer accident related vet cover up to a certain limit by being a member eg. World Horse Welfare which may be more econnomical.

IME if you want to insure a horse for vet’s fees who you previously did insure but then allowed the cover to lapse you will be requested to get a fresh vetting done.

There are catastrophe cover policies which cover external injuries only, they would be worth looking into .

PetPlan will insure up to 25 if you insure before 18 (I believe, my girls are both in their 20s now)

I’ve found them great to deal with and very reasonable with their exclusions. Mine also had KS surgery so spine is no longer covered, hocks are out as they were injected this year and two teeth that flagged in her routine dental but requires no action .
