Insurance for a horse on trial

Hi

Do you insure any horses you have on trial? My sister is getting a one on trial this week and we were thinking about the insurance situation. Its been a long time since we had anything on trial so I wasnt sure what the "done thing" is

Talk to the owner!!

If I were the owner of a horse going on trial I would keep the insurance under my name. I would essentially have you sign a type of loan agreement for the period of the trial and would expect you to cover the costs.
 
Owner must keep up insurance as a new policy would not cover for illness for first 21 days anyway, if the horse is unsuitable and goes back then they will have to re-start insurance and have another 21 days of no illness cover.

your sister will cover all costs barring insurance but may be expected to pay for excess, you need in writing who is responsible for what
 
I had one on trial who was not insured .
I spoke to the NFU they insured her for me until she went back ( failed vet ) I was however mega careful with her no turnout etc etc .
 
Owner hasn't got theirs insured but all of ours are. I was mostly concerned about accidents (for example when travelling) as they are about 100 miles from us.

NFU wont do it for us GS neither will KBIS.

It was a while ago and we have a lot of cover for everything from woods to art works
 
OP - maybe if you can't get insurance make sure in your trial loan agreement that it's clear that the owner continues to be repsonsible for all vets fees even in event of emergancy. Might be difficult to enforce but at least it'll prompt the owners to think about it.
