Has anyone comments on changing to veteran cover from standard cover for horse insurance. This will save me a lot each year but this type of cover only covers accidents and fractures and not illness/disease. My lovely old boy is nearly 25 and in good health. Still being ridden gently about once per week. It’s a difficult decision. Your thoughts are welcome.

When I insured the normal insurance had various exclusions for illness/diseases come into effect at a certain age anyway so you were throwing money down the drain using it. (Can’t remember which insurance company it was). Have you checked what your current insurance covers?

Personally I don’t insure anyway (other than 3rd party) even on younger horses as i never made a claim (and I cover any costs myself). There are lots of threads on here debating whether to insure or not. For an older horse there is the consideration of what procedures would you want to put a horse through.

PS nice to hear your 25 year old is doing well ?

I insured mine with Harry Hall. I actually chose 3rd party only, but they do have an injury only vet policy too that was cheaper than alternatives.

I would check your own policy for exclusions due to age. I suspect you may not be as well insured as you think. That said, if your horse is doing well and you would do major interventions, and he is insured, without exclusions, I would keep it!

My old lad was insured with pet plan. It converted to veteran insurance at 21 (i think) which covered external and visable injury, loss of use, deposal etc. But it only covers upto £1500. They paid out without quibble when i lost him and were really easy to deal with. That said his policy was only £136 a year. The price has increased considerably now so my 18 yr old is with Harry Hall which gives cover for external and visible injury upto £1500 per claim.

I think you have to decide what you would be prepared to put your pony through surgery wise to decide what cover is best for you. Also check tbe exclusions as they do build up as they get older.

Lovely to hear you boy going strong at 25 ?
