I have just bought a horse with a low grade heart murmur and I would like to insure for public liability and vets fees (obviously not relating to murmur/ heart conditions). One insurance co wouldn't insure any horse with a murmur - anyone have a horse insured with a murmur?

I didn't have the horse vetted but he had failed the previous vetting with another buyer, I had him checked by l

Hit post before I had finished! ...I had him checked by vet and he explained particulars - also purchased horse at fraction of original sale price. Vet says likely it won't ever bother him.

Thanks! Holly x

My horse had a low grade murmur, never caused any problems. I don't think the vet even noted it on her certificate. He told me most horses have one, the larger they are, the more likely they will have one.

HollyAnna - Are you sure it isn't 2nd degree heartblock that you are referring to? As your vet said this wouldn't cause your horse a problem I think it may be this that you might be reffering to?

My horse has this and its of no consequence but you do need to advise your vet if he attends your horse for administration of certain drugs which can cause problems with this condition and can bring on a fatal arythmmia, once such drug is called Phenylephrenine which is given for nephrosplenic entrapment. My vet thought my horse might need this drug and there was a real chance he could have had a heart attack from administering this drug, but he didn't need it in the end thank God.
