Hi all, Happy Friday :)

For a while now, I have turned out horses now and again in a morning as a favour for friends on the yard I'm on.

However, I now find myself turning 8 additional horses out each day, bringing an additional 4 in, and sometimes also asked to do a full day (so mucking out, nets, poo picking etc)
Because of all the extra time I'm spending (I work full time in an office and start at 08:00) I have started charging people who request anything, they are all fine with being charged.

(The YO used to provide these services but no longer does and is more than happy for me to do this)

I'm wondering as I am now charging for these services, is it wise for me to be insured and if so what kind of insurance would I need as I am clueless 😂

The BGA offer insurance designed for freelance grooms, which covers public liability and accidents to the horse. In case you aren't aware, if you are "in charge" of a horse and it causes an accident (for example it got away from you and caused a car crash) you could be considered liable, so public liability is very important!

There's details of the insurance here: https://britishgrooms.org.uk/join-now/Freelance-groom-liability-insurance

It costs about £25 a month, and you have to be a BGA member, which is £25, but does have other benefits too- so I guess you would have to decide if it's worth it to you. I would hope you're charging enough to easily cover this!

Companies such as SIEB also offer grooms insurance- I guess you would need to go to them directly for a quote. However, I'd trust the BGA policy to be comprehensive and definitely cover everything you need.

Thank you everyone, that’s all really helpful! Silly old me only charges people £1 for a turnout and this includes rug changes and breakfast!! Too soft for my own good. I think the majority of people will completely understand when I put my prices up and I’m not too bothered about the ones that don’t as I only do it to try and help people out, I don’t do it for the money.

Well, you should do it for the money! One day one will leap on you or something and you’ll get injured. So at least make it worth it!

I used to pay £2 for turnout and breakfast (which I left made up outside the stable), and thought that was good value! For reference, I used to also pay £10 for occasional full day cover which included quick muck out- I left made up feeds and haynets for this, and was incredibly grateful!

It massively helped me out at the time because I got into work between 7.30 and 8, and nothing else was out at the time I needed to turn out, so I was happy to pay £10 a week knowing it helped keep my pony happy!
