Would love some help looking for new horse Insurance that is very basic and cheap.
I’ve found horse-insurances.co.uk thats pretty cheap has any one used them?
I’m looking to pay about £30 a month if possible I don’t need anything fancy as she doesn’t do much a bit of light hacking.
What insurance is every one with and how much roughly is it costing them?

I feel like I’m losing my marbles looking at all theses websites 😂

I would say it's worth paying for decent insurance- the vets bills are the same whether they are used for hacking or high level competition!

I think they are underwritten by E&L who don't have a great reputation.

What are you looking to cover?

'Basic' & 'cheap' isn't something that'll get you very good insurance or a company that's likely to pay out without a huge fight.

I would suggest if you really don't want to pay the going rate for decent insurance, you might be best off taking out BHS Gold membership for about 6 quid a month, which covers public liability and some personal accident and put the other £24 in a savings account to cover vet bills etc. Just remember that even for fairly minor things, vet bills rack up quickly. Mine got a kick to the stifle a few years ago, needed a couple of staples, some antibiotics and 2 nights in the vets and that was £1600.

I pay about £60/month with NFU, who I have so far found to be very good when I have needed claim. It also covers me for £5000 vet bills but does not, however, cover loss of use.

Depends what you want.. if you want decent use NFU you can add what you want and they'll pay. If you want someone cheap and cheerful use horse-insurances.co.uk with no guarantee.

You get what you pay for!

Theres no guarantee with any insurance. E&L did have an awful reputation but everyone I know who has claimed from them has been paid out even in really dubious cases. I've heard more bad things about Pet Plan not paying or NFU putting loads of exclusions on or charging ridiculous premiums as a previous horse has had a claim!

Very true, I had a bad experiance with Petplan and a few friends had luck with horse.insurance yet another didn't.

A friend in insurance had a look into it last year and gave me a percentage on payouts for all different companies, not set in stone but NFU was one of the best and Petplan was mid way with horse.insurance at the bottom. May all of been crap but I went with NFU. Time will tell if they pay out!

I had a nightmare with KBIS, yet cant praise Scottish Equestrian enough. I keep the horse value low to try and keep premiums down as IMO trying to claim loss of horse is another mine field unless a cut and dry claim. I pay about £33 a month.

I can’t rate Scottish Equestrian enough. They always paid out within days of the vets sending the claim for in and always kept me updated. They were more efficient in paying the vets than the vets were asking for payment!

I’ve used them and they have paid out easily and with no quibbles twice now.
I’m currently starting a new claim but this one could be a little fuzzy.
The only thing I’m not too impressed with is that although they say 12 months cover for each illness or Injury it’s actually only until renewal so for example if they do pay this bill (which is going to be ongoing for a while) they will only cover me until May so I actually only get 4 months not 12. Maybe this is normal in insurance? I’m not sure

Scottish Equestrian is now owned by Pet Plan. I have always had claims paid by them but recently they have been much slower and asked for information to be resent several times, they have also added lots of exclusions some of which were unwarranted eg excluding colic when the horse had had a scan for ulcers which was completely clear.

Scottish Equestrian has been owned by Petplan for years :) Same staff work on both brands (or certainly used to) but there are slightly different variations in cover. Scottish generally used to be cheaper than PP for your average happy hacker too.
Julie Andrews/Horse Insurance Services would be worth a call - Julie is lovely and works with a multitude of insurers so will be able to point you in the right direction.

This is good advice. If you are looking to cover third parties with public liability insurance then it may be that BHS membership or even Harry Hall or World Horse Welfare may provide insurance cover, but some household insurance already provides this or it can be easily added. If you are looking for vet bills etc then to a certain extent you get what you pay for. NFU seems to have a good reputation. Or you could try here https://www.seisinsurance.co.uk/. SEIS is owned by Allianz, and Allianz also own Petplan - I can't say whether it is the same staff. KBIS has an online quote system at https://www.kbis.co.uk/get-a-quote.

I was with Scottish equestrian for 13years and never claimed a penny. I was paying a lot per month for very little vets fees cover. I changed last summer to petplan and they charge the same per month with a substantial vet fee cover. Currently claiming at the moment so fingers crossed they pay.

I have literally just got Insurance renewal through for one of mine today-I thought it sounded quite a lot more until I have sat this afternoon and got quotes and have decided I will be staying with NFU as all the others were over £100 more and also wanting a 5 stage vetting and not covering for as much.I have to say NFU were brilliant when we lost our pony a year ago-she had only been insured with them for 4 months and they paid out over £2500 and gave me her value which I wasn’t expecting, there handling was brilliant. It is definetly worth paying out for good insurance as you really don’t know when you may need it.If you have a lot of exclusions on your current then don’t think it is worth it and would say to open an account and put money in there-Premium Bonds always a good place to put money as if you get a few wins a year it’s more than the Interest you get from a bank.

I have used E&L and did have a massive claim for KS surgery, ulcers, hind gut problems and hormonal stuff. They did pay out fully although it did take a while. I'm still insured by them now for different horses, so I know they have a reputation, but in my experience they have been fine to deal with.
