Any recommendations for insurance companies for house + stables + facilities? Do people go with "equestrian" companies, like NFU, or use bog standard ones like directline etc?

thanks!

What do you want to be insured for?
If you have people visiting/ liveries etc. and/or footpaths, bridleways something specialist is probably best - there are small holder specialists as well as equestrian - Shearwater do something as well as NFU

We don't have the employers or public liability risks, my tack is in the house so covered on the bog standard policy, we don;t have valuable equipment/ tractor etc. the barns are old and metal/ brick so our risk is fire (we consider it a remote risk) and probably theft of the trailer (parked inside with wheel lock and it's a v old 510 - so both value and risk is low)

Hence we don't insure. We looking into it and covering bedding, hay and building for earthquakes and fire was going to be best part of £1k p.a - we didn;t feel in our situation it was worth it.

Before you speak to the brokers thing long and hard about what it is you think you need cover for.

We are with Nfu and they are not cheap but at least I know I am covered and they are good at settling claims. I managed to get a few hundred off at my last renewal. They give a reduction if you say you will stay with them for 5 years. Direct line won't cover stables. You need to go to a specialist insurance company for that kind of cover I'm afraid and it's not cheap.

Thanks; I have bought a house with stables, ménage, barn and fields. I wanted to take out just normal occupiers insurance in the house + buildings + ménage. Won't be having liveries etc this is just for my family and our horses. The horses are all insured by NFU and so is my trailer so will speak to them but just wondered if there were any other alternatives?

We had insurance for the same set up as you, house, stables, arena, small amount of land. It was just a domestic policy, and cost around £1,200. We have just changed to NFU, who insure our horsebox and it was £645 for the same policy.

Wow!

What are you insuring the stables and ménage for? flooding, earthquakes even fire's unlikely to burn a ménage

Any normal home insurance policy will cover the house, the stable are no different to a garage or a summer house - they just ignore them on a normal policy

Thanks.

Red that is a massive difference are all the terms the same? Does that cover contents and if so how much is the maximum of each item?

PM: specifically insuring against Fire. A friend of mine had her entire yard and school burn down (luckily the horses were in the field) and she couldn't have rebuilt without the insurance money.

The house needs to be insured anyway in accordance with the HUGE mortgage I have taken out so I figured I may as well get a policy for everything.

Hi, Polo's mum, I said the set up was the same as OPs, we insure the house and stables (as they are not like a summer house, they are brick and block with a tiled roof, electric etc.).

We have not insured the arena or fields.

It was to show the comparison between purely domestic insurance, and NFU, who were better.

CB Angle, yes, the same policy :-) it even includes my tack in the tack room, and new for old for house contents.

Ok, as well as the usual NFU, Shearwater try FandM, ruralinsurance fidelius - but I'd get two quotes one for just the yard/ ménage and one to include your house - if you're clear it's only for fire then it might not add too much - be careful they don't try and get you cover for 100's of things you don't need.

Specialist insurers are more pricy so it may be cheaper to insure your house with a household name and the yard separately.

Also check your mortgage co will allow an obscure provider, if it's a rural specialist mortgage you'll be fine but if not then they may want a more traditional policy

Check, check and check again that your stables are insured. Many policies will say that outbuildings are insured but... Ask specifically if your stables are insured, they ain't a garage.

This was my concern; we have "normal" outbuildings like detached garages and shed etc but also 2 stable blocks, tack room, feed room, farriers enclosure plus storage barn and a hay barn. Then there is the ménage and the fields (all post and rail). Ideally I would like the lot insured with the house so I suspect I need someone like NFU.

We have been insured by the NFU ever since we bought this place they cover everything we insure except the health and travel insurance I cannot recommend them highly enough .
Our home and buildings suffered significant snow damage during that very bad winter we had three ? Winters ago.
Even though the local office must have been under terrible pressure they handled everything so well.

Thanks; have always insured the horses and the box with NFU so they were going to be my first call. I would like at least one or two others though for comparison.
