I don't insure my animals, but you can always ask your vet.

as Cortez said it's very unusual for amateurs or people with normal horses to get horse insurance. Personally I don't know any friends who have it.

yep I just save a cushion of money and also have cash on a credit card I can use. if you have a good relationship with your vet you can spread costs over a few months as well. I have a herd of cheap project horses, so I don't personally think it's worth insuring them. If I had a super expensive competition horse I might consider it.
