Just looking at my insurance and my boy is covered for £3000 vets fees per incident. Would you say this is enough?

He's rising 4 this year, will be starting his ridden work in April but mainly hacking, is turned out 24/7 in summer and stabled at night in the winter (if these details make any difference). He's a trad cob, would say sensible and very hardy but you never know what might happen...

Thanks peeps :)

my boy is covered for £5000 vets fees.
Having been through a friend losing her horse during colic surgery last May, when we arrived at the vet hospital they warned us that an uncomplicated surgery and fast recovery would be about £3000.
Any complications and we could be looking at more than £5000.
Sadly they weren't able to bring him round from the anaesthetic, and that cost nearly £2500.
If you can afford it, I'd up it to £5000.

Definitely if you can afford it increase it. I used to work for a well known equine insurer and I have seen on more than one occasion very complicated colic surgery cases that have cost £6000+ (vets are sometimes nice though and discount this to fit in with £5k limits).

Insurance is one of those things that you can go years without ever having to use, and hope you never have to, but if you do you are glad you have it! Def worth having the higher limit as your not so restricted to treatment limits if you need it. Even something like MRI to help with a lameness exam can cost £1000. Plus the treatment on either side!

I think it's very much down to the individual and what lengths you would go to as far as treatment is concerned and when maybe you would call it a day. It also depends on your own financial situations.

Having worked for an equine insurer for 7 years until last year I think they actually need to look at changing their veterinary fees covers. The limits have not changed for years yet veterinary science has changed and improved greatly and more operations are available all the time and they are costly so i think insurance companies need to extend their limits per incident. However, as equine insurance really doesn't make any money for the companies I can't see them doing that any time soon!!!

Treatment can add up so you can quickly reach your £3000 limit so maybe, if you can afford it, up the limit amount and maybe consider a higher excess if you think you're only likely to claim for 'disaster' veterinary fees as it were.

one of mine is insured for 5k and once has reached that limit and that was a lameness (had surgary but no MRI) and several other for around the £1500mark. and my recently aquired persona 5yr old has 5k vet fees which in the case of colic surgay is increased to 7500k. yet they are about the same to insure
