Hi all
I am looking to switch insurance after NFU renewal scared the life out of me!

I have been getting quotes from different companies (only looking at the more well known companies who I feel are more trustworthy) and KBIS are coming out cheapest.

Does anyone have any experience with dealing with them? Are they a decent, reliable company? Would love to stick to NFU as I think their customer care is excellent but the premium is nearly double what I have been quoted by KBIS

Thanks

Don't have any experience of dealing with them, but I think their vets fees only go up to 3k, may be wrong. I've been looking at insurance this week, I rang my vet yesterday they said that while the others have their pros and cons nfu are the ones they never have any issues with.

I use KBIS and they have been fab. My vets fees go up to 5k (7k for colic). They have paid out 5k on one horse and just over 2k on my other in the 2 years I've been with them. Always fast payment and never any hassle or arguments.

I have only good things to say about KBIS. Fast payout, lovely people, easy to deal with and covered me up to £5k (think colic was covered up to £7500) Sent payment direct to vets quickly enough to qualify for prompt payment discount. Customer service was brilliant and couldn't faullt them in any way.

Absolutely fantastic, i`m with KBIS paid out quickly and with out holding things up when Coby had his accident last year .... i`ve used a couple of different companies in the past, but wouldn`t use anyone else now.

Kbis is fab. When my horse fractured his leg this summer they sent us a form, we filled it in and less than a week later we had a copy of the cheque they had paid to the vets. Over £1500 and no questions, they're great

Same as the others above. I have both of mine insured with them and when I claimed - only a couple of months after starting the policy - they paid up with no questions. Just check the policy level as I mistakenly insured my older horse on the silver policy which only paid 85% of vet bills - my fault for not reading it carefully enough.

as above absolutely brilliant when it comes to customer service and claiming!

Just make sure you pick the correct cover, i had the most basic one to start with and have upped it to gold cover which is 5k vets (7k for colic).

Much cheaper than other good reputable companies and think u can get discount if BS member

I have always in the past been with NFU, and can't fault their service at all. Always paid out when needed to with full amount... Just a shame they are so expensive compared to others!

Just received a quote from KBIS after recommendation from friends, and tempted to swap.

Sadly I had a bad experience with KBIS.

We had a mare insured with them that sadly developed wobblers. My vet advised pts, so informed the insurance company, and duly did the act.

They would only pay out the euthanasia costs as said that she wasn't in pain, despite my vet saying she could collapse in the field at anytime.

I have had good dealings with KBIS over the past six months - they pay out quickly and efficiently and when you phone them you quickly get through to a human being!

The only word of caution is that watch the level of cover you opt for. As a previous poster says, the silver level only pays out 85% of vets fees. The other thing I found was that when my horse was diagnosed with kissing spines and PSD in June, they wouldn't treat it as two conditions, which meant I had the £5,000 limit for treating both.

With KBIS (not sure if this is the same with others) a claimable incident is not judged on each diagnosed conditions, but an onset of symptoms.

They paid out over £3.000 for treatment and vet's assessments for my horse, however, with no problem, and were quite prepared to pay out for spine surgery, although I subsequently had the horse PTS because of the number of secondary issues he had.

Also be aware that the silver cover doesn't cover physio treatment, nor livery when a horse has to go to hospital! You just have to read the terms & conditions carefully, which I hadn't until I needed too!

Having said that, i have insured my new horse with them as I thought overall their service was pretty good. This time I've gone for the Gold level of cover!

My mare is also insured with KBIS and she has had a lot of treatment this year, including an MRI and they paid with a week of receiving the invoice and direct to the vets.

I have changed cover, as before she was only insured for £3000 of vet fees, know it is up to £5000 and more for colic.

The only trouble I did have, is that she has had treatment for all 4 legs, check ligament on one, synovitis and side bone on the other and arthritis on her hind legs. As the vet noticed the hind limb lameness at the same time, even thought they are not related, all 4 legs had to go onto the same claim! Luckily, I have had just enough, but had to go down the steroid route and not the IRAP route. The hind limb lameness was intermittent and vet felt it was more important to sort the front end out first.

She seems to be fixed, so fingers crossed!

I would recommend and they aren't too expensive.

On the plus side KBIS have always paid out very promptly once the payment was agreed. IMO however, they are the master of the exclusion clause....so if you have a problem with the off hind, they will exclude the diagonal near fore as well as the near hind. Having said that my new four year old has been insured with them, although he will only be insured (hopefully) for the first 12 months whilst we get to 'know' him.

Yes I agree with gunnergundog. My mare did her check ligament in her near fore and the have excluded both front legs. Luckily or Unluckily (whichever way you want to look at it) she has had to haver her off fore treated, so I suppose it is good that she had problems whilst she is still covered! They also excluded anything to do with her sweet itch which she had before I bought her.
