I'm in the middle of doing the business plan for the livery & production yard that we want to start....looking at Insurance and there are lots of different types you need. I was wondering if anyone out there who is further down the line of running their own yard could either reply or PM me with info about what insurance stuff they have.

Also, any other words of wisdom, how you went about it, what you'd do differently would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks x

My advice, although I don't think you will want to hear it, is don't do it. I used to run a livery yard and would never ever run one again. The horses are fine, the people, a load of trouble makers and basket cases! More trouble than it's worth believe me.

I'd second Charmaine - don't do it - there are easier ways to make money - keep the yard for your own horses and do another job instead

only way doing liveries is more or less OK is if you get the sort of owner that never appears !!! (the horses are fine....)

Haha, thanks guys, and I do hear what you are saying

Livery will only be a small part of the yard, the main focus is my boyfriend's baby, he is into producing and selling sports horses and JRN's..

Any other coments welcome!

By law, the only insurance that you need is employers' liability if you are employing anyone or using voluntary help. However, you could be liable for any damage to property or people for which you are found legally negligent, arising from the business. Therefore, it is recommended that you have public liabilty insurance.

The rest of the covers depend on how much you want to spend etc.

We had a very small yard (ie couple of horses) as few years ago as a sideline thing and we used NFU Mutual as we use them for everything. They were really good and took the time to explain it all to us. Might be worth a try.

Good luck
