I'm thinking ahead here and just wondered about insurance and loss of use claims.
My horse is currently being treated for lameness, DDFT tears in both fronts and synovial masses in navicular bursar. We are nearly at the vets fees limit and will be 12 months on from start of claim around September time.

Does anyone know if I continue paying for treatment after the 12 months from start of claim and then sometime in the future she doesn't become sound am I still able to make a loss of use claim?

Thanks in advance

You have 12 months from the original injury/ diagnosis to claim for treatment/ LOU, in order to claim LOU you would need to do within the time and be able to prove the horse is not going to return to the use it is insured for , not easy within the limit and is why so many LOU claims fail.
You would need your vet to say there is little hope of return to full use and probably get the ball rolling fairly soon so you have some leeway to jump through hoops if they want you to.

The LOU time period can vary depending on the insurer.

With NFU I had 12 months from injury for vets fees but 24 months for LOU

Thanks for your replies I had best check as was thinking surely if I'm post 12 months injury and am still proceeding with treatment and paying for it myself I have to give her the chance to become well before putting in a loss of use claim.

I am also with NFU so hopefully have the extra time as feel it's too early to be thinking of LOU but don't want to miss any time deadlines

Details should be on your policy, however you will need to check with your insurance as every policy can be different!
Best be safe than sorry!

Some companies will put an extension on for LOU to allow a period of time once the horse is back in work to see if the problem is going to re-occur or not but you may have to talk to your particular company to see what their procedure is.

I'll be digging out my policy to check and calling just to be sure. Sometimes it would be nice to not have to deal with insurance claims, feels like one thing after another.
Oh well she's into the vets for more treatment tomorrow so onwards and upwards!
