Means that a horse has had a successful claim for loss of use, whatever it was insured for, could be in any discipline. It will affect any further insurance but not necessarily mean the horse can't do another job. e.g. Eventer could go on to do dressage.

Loss of Use: exactly as it says, unable to perform at the level it has been insured for due to injury.

When you insure a horse there is an option to insure for 'loss of use'. Normally an insurance cover taken out on competition horses (but not always). If the horse then sustains an injury/illness that stops it from doing the job you have insured it for the insurance company will pay out a % of the horses value in a lump sum and the horse will be branded with an L.

So if you see a horse with an L you know that at some point in it's past it has suffered a significant injury/illness.

LOU can only be awarded if strict BEVA guidlines have been followed. ie. The horse has to have had a definitive diagnosis and undergone treatment (if possible) for a certain amount of time. If no significant improvement has been seen in that time, then the insurance will more than likely pay out for LOU.

So, a horse with an L brand will have had a claim on it but it doesn't necessarily preclude it from doing other jobs. ie. friend bought a horse that had LOU for headshaking as it was a (v expensive) dressage horse. He has gone on to do very well in other disciplines.
